Who should I contact for Advertising on Calibre?

Hi forum,

Does anyone know who I can contact in order for my company to sponsor Calibre and help support the development?

Thank you for your time. I look forward to the possibility of collaborating.

Kind regards, Anders

The day an ad pops up on Calibre, or flashes on the bottom of the screen, is the day I stop using it.

calibre does not have advertising in the software, only on the website and that is managed programmatically, anyone is free to bid for spots

We all just drop Kovid a bit of money now and then in thanks instead. Which has reminded me to go do just that.

You probably don't want to poll the population of Mobileread on whether they would embrace advertising in Calibre. You wouldn't like the results.

The day ads come to Calibre, the enshittification of the product would start.

I understand the sentiment, and sympathise. I wouldn't want to see advertising, either.

But let's suppose that advertising does appear and you give up using Calibre in response. What will you then use in its place? I'm not aware of any viable alternative to it for a lot of the stuff for which I use it. And I'm not a power user by any stretch of the imagination: I know that it has functionality that I don't even know how to use, let alone actually use.

As @meeera said "We all just drop Kovid a bit of money now and then in thanks". I'm very happy with this model. Long may it continue!

I remember when the creator of Sigil got talked into OpenCandy.
Not only was it annoying, Even if I opted out, I found some stuff still running (stealth?) after it was 'removed' from Sigil.

I would have Pay aps than intrusive (or hidden) adware.

Yup. That'd work. But it presupposes that there's somebody (or a group of somebodies) who are capable of doing the work and have both the time and the inclination to do it.

I'd like to think, though, that we're nowhere near to needing to find out.

Some famous (infamous?) forks

Quote:
When Oracle bought Sun, it declared its intention to trademark the Hudson name, and development began on a commercial version. It was decided by the majority of the development community, including Kawaguchi, to continue the project under the name Jenkins in early 2011. Oracle maintained that Hudson was continuing development and that Jenkins was a fork; the Jenkins developers considered Hudson to be the fork.

Interest in Hudson collapsed thereafter. Eventually Oracle donated the remaining Hudson project assets to the Eclipse Foundation at the end of 2012.[8]

Having been replaced by Jenkins, Hudson is no longer maintained[9][10] and was announced as obsolete in February 2017.[11] The Hudson website, hudson-ci.org, was closed down on Jan 31, 2020.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson_(software)

Star Office -> Open Office -> Libre Office
Quote:
OpenOffice.org is an open-source office productivity software suite. It originated from the proprietary StarOffice, developed by Star Division, which was acquired by Sun Microsystems in 1999. Sun open-sourced the software in July 2000 as a free alternative to Microsoft Office,[8][9] and released OpenOffice.org version 1.0 on 1 May 2002.[1]

Following Sun’s acquisition by Oracle Corporation, development of OpenOffice.org slowed and eventually ended.[10] In 2011, Oracle donated the project to the Apache Software Foundation,[11][12] which continues it as Apache OpenOffice,[13] although that project has been largely dormant since 2015. A more actively developed fork, LibreOffice, was created in 2010 by members of the OpenOffice.org community.
Obviously this is not the table fork!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fork_(...re_development)

Curiously in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England the table fork wasn't used in England. The French and Polish argue about which invented it. But by the time of King James I (England) who was James VI in Scotland, England had some forks and coffee houses. Though Tea was over 1000 years older, it became more popular later. Of course the Chinese invented forks first about 3000 years ago despite now being famous for chopsticks. However it probably came to Northern Europe via Italy from the Middle East and Byzantine Empire (now mostly Turkey).

Yes, I agree. @Quoth is right, in that forking can work. Indeed, I'm familiar with one to which he/she/they refer: I've been using LibreOffice for many years, having previously been an Open Ofice user. But I'm very happy with Calibre as it stands at present, and wouldn't be terribly concerned if development ceased tomorrow. Nonetheless, I'm very happy to support ongoing development with the occasional donation.
