Downloading ebooks for Kindle 4
Now that Amazon won’t allow you to download a copy of the ebooks you buy from them, I’m looking for a place to buy them that would work with an old kindle, a 4th generation one.
I read in this thread* that booksamillion.com has epubs. Does anyone know if a downloaded ebook from booksamillion would work with a kindle 4th generation? The booksamillion site said it won’t allow refunds for ebooks. Thanks *https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...million&page=3 |

I think your Kindle 4th generation (I think it is likely a Kindle Touch) can still download books from Amazon and you could use calibre and plugins to copy the books from it to your computer for editing/whatever which might be simpler for you. |

No epub works on a Kindle without conversion.
That said, you can buy from any epub store allowing downloads (including Kobo and Google Play), remove the DRM and convert for your Kindle (or use Send to Kindle to send an epub without converting, but you'll still have to remove the DRM if the book has it). |

Maybe this is an older Kindle that won't register. Which seems to be an issue with some of the older Kindles (even the ones that are still, supposedly, supported).

I know a K3/KK can be registered. So anything newer can be registered. The OP's K4 & K5 can be registered. So That's not the problem. I do use my Kindle Touch to download and it works no problem.

Unfortunately this is not always the case. You should still be able to register the K4 and K5, but we've seen reports (here) where people can't. Amazon "support" just throws up their hands and offers a small discount on a new eReader.

You should still be able to download directly to the device if it's connected to the internet and your Amazon account. From there, the deDRM plugin for Calibre should be able to remove the DRM, but only if you transfer to your computer within Calibre. For some reason, moving files to a computer manually and then trying to deDRM them no longer works.

With older Kindle formats copying the main from from the device was sufficient. However books are split over multiple files in KFX format. For those you also need to copy the associated .sdr folder so that all of the pieces can be found and put together by the KFX Input plugin.

With KFX, its best to drag/drop the .kfx file from the Kindle direct into calibre so the KFX Input plugin can find all the bits to combine into a single file so DeDRM can remove the DRM.

Simplest is to use "Add books to library" from calibre's toolbar when the Kindle is connected.
Also workable is copying the main book file and the associated .sdr folder to a local drive and then using drag-and-drop or the "Add books" toolbar button to import it from there. |

Works for azw3 (kindles from K3 to PW1 inclusive, excluding DXG family). Assuming you have all the correct plugins. With azw3 the cover and images are in colour, otherwise with KFX on most Kindles those are mono/B&W. Incredibly simple and quite fast on the K3. Downloads are also very much faster on the K3 to PW1 than later Kindles because Amazon seems to throttle KFX as it can be opened to read before download is complete. It's a pain ensuring the KFX download has completed before you connect Kindle to PC. |
