I mostly limit myself to emailing authors telling them I understand why they use KDP Select, but I'd appreciate if they let me know if they ever go wide as I don't use a Kindle device and don't like reading on phone and Amazon makes it very hard to get books anywhere else. (If author is Canadian, I also make a point of Kobo being a Canadian company.)

Just today updated my Calibre plugins and added jHowell's kfx plugin to do an end-around this Amazon blocking downloads and it works a treat on my paperwhite.

I recently saw an article about online streaming that is instructive. Basically the author said that the restrictions and pricing changes were simply going to encourage piracy. I think that will be the case with Amazon e-books as well.

I think you'll find that the venn-diagram of people buying ebooks from amazon and people wanting their ebooks liberated and ready to be read on any device they want isn't overlapping that much. The overlap is probably the people posting here

I suspect that overlap would be near-zero if Amazon didn't use its monopoly power to lock authors into Amazon-exclusive contracts.

Amazon already has over 90% of English Language ebook sales world wide.

The majority of Kindle ebooks are read on apps on phone, tablet (iOS, Android, Fire, Windows).

Amazon may have a large english language catalogue, but so does Kobo.

It's easy to boycott amazon's entire product range, not just books. I've never bought anything from amazon's product range, and in the past only the occasional book. But then I boycott US products whenever I can, and have done so for decades.

Thats already the case.

amazon.de stopped allowing download files to pc. If you put your kindle online it forces a firmware upgrade on it.
I also think it messes up your book list because the one time I did that (with an old PW) I had all previously bought books on it as well as any book samples I ever used. took me a while to clean up that mess. but admitedly I might have made a mistake.

anyway, it is way too risky to go online with your old kindle.

It's incredibly easy to not buy anything from Amazon, I deleted my Amazon account five months ago and haven't missed it one bit, bought plenty of stuff online since then and haven't struggled to find anything.

found my old kindle voyage from 2016 which I haven't used since 2017. I'm still surpriced it works after I got it charged. I used the drag and drop to transfer my newest ebook to calibre. Works perfectly . Now just to transfer the rest of my ebooks from after Apr 25 and when this now longer works then I'll stop using Amazon for ebooks

Downloading directly to my Kindles is the only way I do it now. All my Kindles are too old for updates.
