I expected to post a question on a Kindle forum and maybe get answers back from Kindle users. Silly me. My question is then, if you don't like Kindles, what are you even doing here? Why aren't you in the Kobo forum?

I'm not interested in your inferior device.

Once more, with feeling: I asked a Kindle question wanting a Kindle answer. Please promote the Kobo in the Kobo forum.

I am somewhat interested in inferior devices, that's why I visit the Kindle forum.

My personal feeling is that anyone who wrote the contents of message #13 in this thread and then complains about off topic posts should look for their headshot in the dictionary—next to the definition for hypocrite.

As someone who owns and uses both Kobo and Kindle devices, I feel my opinion has at least as much as your Kindle only user opinion.

As near as I can tell, the state of the art for Kindles has not changed since this thread was created nearly 10 years ago and your question was answered more or less in the 3 messages after your necro-post. As mentioned above, message #13 opened this thread to the Kindle vs. Kobo discussion. Do you remember who wrote the following quoted message? If not, take a look in the nearest mirror and see if anyone looks more than vaguely familiar.

Truth be told, as proprietary and ham-fisted as Amazon can be, I find the Kindle to be superior devices in almost every way. I like the way they feel and the way they behave. Amazon has a lot of leeway with me as long as they keep creating devices of this quality.
And for the popularity of StK? The vast majority of Amazon ebooks are read on iOS and Android devices since compared to the numbers of downloads/installs for those (~250,000,000), the Kindle ereader sales are pretty much a rounding error. Kobo and Kindle will happily sync their store bought books synced to their apps and very few people out of that user population will ever use StK.

But you're missing it completely. Every time I come here to ask a question about Kindle someone inevitably chimes in and suggests I change device. It's beginning to feel intentional, as if you all are working for Kobo and have chosen this as a place to push the Kobo … of which I have no interest.

A simple: "No that's not possible." –or– "Here's how you do that on Kindle." –or– "The tech specs lead me to believe…" …anything regarding the question I actually asked. Instead I get, "Buy a Kobo." I have both the intelligence and the resources to buy new devices at will. As I'm here asking a question about Kindles, it would seem obvious that I'm looking for specific answer about … the Kindle.

And your opinions about my inferior Kindle would be welcome. What I'm not interested in is any information or opinions you have about your inferior Kobo. I can't seem to get this across. Ask a question about a Kindle, get answers about a Kobo.

Well, you were the one who brought Kobo into this discussion, so you only have yourself to blame.

No, I don't. I was responding to what I knew was coming. The inevitable response to a question about Kindles is "Buy a Kobo." You can see it for yourself by browsing the posts here about Kindle. Every time someone will chime in with their opinions about the Kobo.

So your comments in your first message in this thread (#9) were a preemptive strike? Your message #13 was also to be disregarded? You dragged Kobo into this discussion and seem to be unwilling to live with the results of your words.

It seems that Kobo ereaders not having an issue with artificially introduced limits on the number of highlights and/or annotations is not to be mentioned because you will only accept an answer that will keep you in comfort of Amazon's walled garden.

You've just perfectly highlighted what I'm talking about. I said…

have not found an acceptable alternative — don't like Kobo, don't want the distraction of Android.
This is hardly 'bringing Kobo into the discussion'. I was merely highlighting that I need a solution that works with Kindle as I won't be using other readers. No one latched onto the the fact that I said I didn't want the distraction of Android. The Kobo reactions come across as very cultish. Either cultish or corporate, I can't decide which.

I have no problems, FYI, living with the results of this discussion. I just think the cult of Kobo has a problem with criticism. I really am wondering now if this isn't some form of paid advertising.

You are right about one thing, though, Kobos don't have artificially introduced limits on the number of highlights. And yet, rather than use a Kobo, I've chosen simply to manually move over annotations into Calibre after ever reading session. I would rather do the extra work than deal with a the likes of Kobo.

Of course it is. And no one said anything about your Android remark because you didn't say "I don't like Android", like you did about Kobo. Of course folks got curious what it was about Kobo you didn't like. If all you wanted was a discussion about Kindles, why drag other brands into it? You could have made a neutral remark about not wanting to consider anything else.

It looks like you wanted a fight, and you got one.

Saying I don't like the distraction of Android IS saying I don't like Android. How did you miss that?

My question is why is it taboo to say you don't like Kobo on this forum? I mentioned Kobo and Android because those are the two go-to platforms everyone talks about as alternatives to Kindle. Curiosity I could excuse, but this really is bordering on the cultish. I don't care when people say they hate Kindle or Amazon, nor do I feel the need to interrogate them. I could care less what device someone chooses to use.

Of course, I'm not a corporate shill, so maybe that has something to do with it?

I'm only too happy to fight, but no, I wasn't looking for one. I was trying to find an answer to a technical question. The fact that you can't stomach the phrase "I don't like Kobo" says nothing about me and everything about you.

I don't care at all what you like or don't like. I just find it strange that you wonder why people talk about Kobo after you introduced the topic yourself.

Of course it isn't taboo to say you don't like Kobo (or any other brand). It's just somewhat hypocritical to expect people not to respond to such a statement on a public forum. If you don't want a discussion about Kobo devices, don't mention them.

And FYI, not liking the distraction of something is not the same as not liking that something per se. There's a difference.
