Maybe not ebook users in general (as most of them read on tablets and phones), but certainly not a small part of Kindle users. I wouldn't say it's the minority among those, going by the number of posts I've seen about it.

Right. But continually suggesting a device to readers who have tried and rejecting it isn't helping anyone. I read a lot — 230 books last year, each and everyone on a Kindle — so I'm versed in what Kindle can and can't do. I would love if Kobo had worked for me, but it's an inferior device.

I read mostly on my Sage but I will read on another Kobo ereader and the Kobo app on my iOS devices or Android tablet. For the most part, I find that searching for a phrase from the last bit of text I read on my Sage is easier than remembering to sync my Sage to update the reading progress for Kobo purchased & synced ebooks before leaving the house.
Years back, I did play with a tool that allowed syncing progress for all books on your Kobo but it was never all that usable and if I wanted it to work outside my home, I had to set up a port forward to allow the connection which is a bit of a security hazard. The person responsible for the code disappeared from SourceForge when his real life job didn't leave him the spare time to work on it and so the project went to the great bitbucket in the sky. |

Also the majority of people don't use eink at all for ebooks, they read on one app on one phone. |

For me, Kobo ereaders are the superior device. The open nature so I don't need to jailbreak if I want to play with KOReader or Plato, the add-ons such as NickelMenu, the ability to patch the behaviour using KoboPatcher. Other things such as font selection, line spacing, margins. Every time I use a Kindle, I end up asking why does a Kindle insist that margins on an eInk device should be so wide? Attempting to emulate the appearance of a paperback book? The ability to easily edit an ePub also makes a Kobo a superior choice. That Amazon does not eat their own dog food (try sending an Amazon format ebook via StK or to Amazon KDP) is yet another reason for not owning a Kindle. As for reading a lot in a year? For the month of April, 2025, my reading stats say that I finished 121 books and from Jan. 01, 2025 to April 30, 2025, I finished 398 books. Admittedly most of these are fiction so light reads and not much need to stop and think about the concepts being presented. There were also 10 or so books read with a granddaughter on a Kobo Libra Colour which is great for kids picture books where the sins of a Kaleido 3 screen are not noticeable. OTOH, keeping her younger sister from taste testing the KLC was an ongoing issue. |

And I have no problem with those opinions, but all the things you suggested that a Kobo can do are a bug and not a feature for me. I don't want to spend time tweaking the device; I want to spend time reading, and Kindle does that almost magically, staying out of my way, not bothering me, not requiring me to think about anything but reading.

Again, my problem isn't that you like Kobo — my problem is that I asked a question about making something potentially work on a Kindle and you suggest I change devices. I wasn't asking for recommendations for a new device. I was asking a specific Kindle question.

I'm one of those who moved from Kindle to Kobo, because I find Kindles to be inferior. For me personally, not necessarily for everyone. |

You didn't ask about Kobos, but you said they were inferior devices on a public forum. Given how many active members here are Kobo owners, what did you expect? You could have asked your question without slurs on other brands - it would have been enough to just say that you dislike Kobo devices.

I've also popped my Kobos open to make images of the internal storage as backups and to replace the internal storage with a larger card. For my sins, I've now ending up managing the image repository. The only KoboPatch tweak I make use of is the one to have the font size in the two renderers close to the same. Once done, I don't need to think about it when switching between the two renderers. I do edit most of the epubs I read for consistent font sizes, indented paragraphs, removing dropcaps, removing those stupid chapter headers that chew up 75% of a page, setting the default margin to 0, etc. Using my saved searches in Sigil keeps the time to do this to most books in the 5-10 minute range. Bit of background, I spent years as an electronic tech and built several computers from magazines such as Radio-Electronics and Popular Electronics. I then moved into computers as a career and spend more years that I can to think about working with computers and then networks and data centers. I spend my last years as a network/server/storage/virtualization administrator with a sideline in computer forensics. |
