A couple of questions about Jailbreaking and using KOReader
Questions about jailbreaking a Kindle plus using KOReader....
1. If you JB, can you get it back to stock if you want? 2. If you JB, install KOReader, do you have ability to exit KOReader and use stock reader like you can with KOReader and Kobo? |

Aren’t question 1 and 2 the same question only worded differently? In any case the answer is yes.

Koreader is launched by KUAL program that acts as a book inside the regular kindle system. If you wish to use stock reader, you just open books as normal.

The jailbreak is not an OS replacement. All the jailbreak does is let you run 3rd party code on the Kindle. Nothing more. The main code you run is a launcher called KUAL, as was already pointed out. KOReader is simply a program that is then run/launched from KUAL. None of it replaces anything on the Kindle or it's normal operation.

So yes, as @Frogm4n mentioned - JB works alongside with main device OS giving you ability to install and run 3rd party apps like KOReader. I think it's a good topic that can be pinned to the top of the Amazon Kindle subforum since similar questions arise from time to time. My personal problem "to JB or not to JB" is to understand and answer a question "do I really need it" ![]() I'm pretty happy with a process I have now and I don't see any advantage in getting KOReader or running Alpine linux on the Kindle device I own. For the last 3 y. I got only 3 books from Amazon Store and all of the books I have - are from different online stores, which sent to my device over Calibre and converted as usual from ePub to AZW3 (using all default settings). Since I'm not reading fancy formats like DJVU and I can see some people are concerned about: 1) each ePub file you open might have different fonts/size settings (you need to set up "per format" settings I guess); 2) bottom status bar is too busy and complicated (however you can change it); 3) You can customize almost everything which takes time and distracting you from actual reading moving forward (treat that as a second phone or laptop); - I'm not sure if it's a good fit for me now. The only idea I like so far is to use wireless sync option with Calibre. That's awesome. |
