Self update to 5.18.1 after disabling OTA updates
I have succesfully installed WinterBreak on a 5.17.0 Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) bu following the guide on https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking
However after the step Disabling OTA Updates after clicking "Rename" the device rebooted and installed 5.18.1. Now I can't continue by launching KUAL Am i screwed? ![]() |

Do simple restart twice.
Install the hotfix again. Reinstall all the bin packages again |

Same thing happened to me. And now the firmware has been updated to 5.18.1 on my KC
I am trying to run the hotfix, which is fine, but the kindle does not let again install the KUAL file |

I tried to reinstall the hotfix, but when I try to update (in order to install it), an update error comes up.
I think the JB is gone, what I do not understand is why, despite following all the steps and making sure there would be no update (renametoabin step), it automatically updated after rebooting, instantly. There was nothing to do ! I am desperate now, just expecting a new JB to come out for the 5.18.1 version |

If the update file was downloaded prior to you doing the OTA block, the file will be on your Kindle and will install. Unfortunately, the only way I know of to prevent this is to delete the update file before disconnecting from your computer.

The sad thing is, that no where in the tutorial there was a warning against this possibilty. Which result in having an unwanted and non reversible update while jailbreaking ! I'm kinda sad, but hoping for the community to come with a new jailbreak ! ![]() |

At the time, the jailbreak was created that was not a problem since 5.18.1 was not yet released. The first PW4 I jailbroke seems to be on Amazon's push firmware update immediately list, the other seems to get updates at the trailing edge of the cycle. That first one is why I am paranoid enough to check for update files before ejecting every time.
