I'm reading (I think) a kepub on my kobo right now, and it's reminding me why I always preferred the kindle. Massive borders I can't get rid of. Having to mess up my epub settings to try to make it a bit more usable.

Sure, my kobo OS hasn't been updated for many years - I stopped it connecting after updates kept making things worse - and maybe it's better these days, but I've rarely had major issues with the actual reading part on any of my kindles.

While I find the reading experience on my Kobos much better than on Kindles. Of course, I patch my Kobos and edit the formatting of my ebooks. The result is much nicer than I could ever achieve on a Kindle.

Reading ePub is faster then it was. Highlighting with ePub is easier then it was. So those are two very good reasons to switch. Fixing the margins on ePub is very easy to do in most cases. Some you do have to dig at the code because it's so bad such a when Velum is used and from Standard EBooks who want what should be very simple code to be overly complex and useless code.

Huh? My K4 smallest margins (L,R) were still huge. Lucky me, someone posed that there was a file on the Kindle that I could edit and put a smaller number than the menu set. Slight down, sometimes other changes stomped it and I had to put my change back. I have a Bezel, I do not need to waste screen space.
OTOH a 0 margin on my Kobo is 0. That is, if the BOOK does not have a bigger one.
Like @Sirtel, I edit my CSS so I only get changes I want. A clean styled book, this costs me 30 seconds. A garbage (inconsistent, stylesheet per chapter...) styled book has taken me up to a half hour to repair the majority of the trash.

Also @piperclassique, as you're also coming from an Oasis I can give you a few more pointers from my experience. It's quite similar to the Oasis in terms of layout but it does feel a bit different; the buttons are more "clicky" and the device is overall thicker as it doesn't have the same lopsided design. The plastic body does feel less "premium", but on the other hand, this and the recessed screen makes me less worried to damage it; I'm more inclined to use it without a case and just leave it around the house, which is great because the color screen makes it almost feel like having a paperback lying around.
Thank you, that's useful information. Perhaps a silly question, but is it possible to do highlights without the stylus? Using a finger?

Yes, you can still do highlights with just a finger.

Something is off somewhere. My Kobo can send text to nearly the edge of the screen, whereas Kindle margins are two wide, even at their narrowest setting.

IIRC Kobo's margin settings are added on top of the margins set in the CSS, so if you have massive CSS margins, the only way to fix it is to either edit the book or use KOReader to override the book's CSS.

I don’t understand all the animosity toward Amazon. I still can download their books on my computer, run it through Calibre and covert to epub and read it on a multitude of apps on my iPad Mini. Amazon seems to generally have the best price, widest selection, offers free monthly books through Prime, many through Unlimited. And as an aside I like their reader App on my Mini. Have had to trouble sending epub books to Kindle.

Out of curiosity how are you downloading it onto your computer? Through the Kindle for pc?

The argument I had with Amazon was they have effectively blocked me from downloading my books to my PC as I use Linux so download and transfer by USB was the only option I had (when talking about downloading to your PC)

But again for me the removal of D&T was just the final straw.

Download on my Windows 10 (desktop) or Windows 11 (laptop) to Kindle app version 1.40.1. When I borrow from library I use Adobe Digital Editions version 4.5.3.
To move files between Apple devices and internet drives I use the File Browser app by Stratospherix Ltd. Best utility app on my iPad. It will send to Kindle and also plays music and videos, read epub and PDFs.

See that was my major complaint, you aren't downloading it to your PC per se you are downloading it to Kindle for PC, running Linux I don't have that option as Amazon do not have a Kindle for PC for Linux.

But if it works for you thats good, it just wasn't an option for me, but I actually don't mind as it's forced me away from Amazon and led me to discover some great alternatives!

Is that Kindle app version correct? You are unable to download any books released on or after 2023-Jan-05 with that version whereas any version higher than 2.4.0 has DRM that does not have a public removal option.

Well, I am not a sophisticated computer user. When I got the laptop over a year ago I installed the Kindle app version from the installer app that I had saved. I just checked the version to answer the previous post.it is indeed correct. I load the plugin into Calibre. No problems.
