I would try sending a few .epub books to a directory on your Kobos (call it eBooks for boredom) and see if they show up.
If you want even more boring, my directory for my books is called books.

Short and simple are easier to remember and make for shorter paths.

The latest Calibre preview adds built-in kepub and disables this plugin:

Actually, there 5 of the kepub plugins are now blacklisted since kepub is now a part of calibre's supported formats.

'KoboTouchExtended'
'KePub Input'
'KePub Output'
'KePub Metadata Reader'
'KePub Metadata Writer'

In many ways good. The functionality of the Extended driver is now rolled into the KoboTouch driver and since Kovid Goyal (creator of calibre) has taken ownership, the support will be excellent.

I have been away a few days, but thank you all for your help!
To summarize answers to your questions:
I have been using calibre for many years without problems (Sony PRST01, Libra H20 since 2019 and recently the Libra Colour).
The databases were ok, as suggested in a previous post. I send books to main memory (the only memory) via calibre.
File extensions on the H2O on e.g. books I have read are .kepub. Changing the extension for new books to kepub.epub doesn't make a difference.
So far no succes with a "Boeken" folder (dutch for boring ;-)

I double checked and my Kobos will not open an ebook in a file called filename.kepub. An ebook in a file called filename.kepub.epub or filename.epub will open.

Are you using Windows without showing extensions for known files? That would truncate the .epub from the display and just show filename.kepub instead. I've attached an image from a Windows 11 computer showing the setting.

Thank you.
I have checked the file extension, they are indeed kepub.epub see the added screenshot.

The first book was transferred earlier, no problems reading. The second book doesn't show up on the reader. Both are in the same folder location.
I can open the second book on the pc, directly or in calibre, no errors. What am I missing?

Have you tried restarting your Kobo (power off and then power on). This will force a reload of the database from storage, etc.

I did, for both devices.
I do find it odd that both ereaders have the same problem. If it were a corrupt database, I would expect that on one of the devices.

Metadata Plugboard will mess things up when used in the wrong (all devices) cases.

I'm wondering if anyone has samples of books that did not convert properly (ie ones with the italic or other issues).

It would be worthwhile testing them with the preview release of calibre and it's native kepub support.
