Why Amazon specifically instead of all digital buying? I check Calibre before buying book.

I did that with the movie Pi. We only discovered it while organizing the DVD collection and finding out that we had 3 copies.

Yes, several times I have seen a book that sounds interesting. Amazon does not tell me I own it but when I look in Calibre, it is there and marked from Amazon.

It seems if the publisher re-issues it, Amazon does not let me know I already own it even though it still has the same title.

Or even the title is changed and it's 100% the same book so you buy it even though it's apparently not in Calibre, though actually it is, so now I put alternat titles in the Subtitle field. Also common on USA vs UK /Europe retail for a book issued on both at the same time to use a different title. Idiot publishers pretending it's the 19th C.

Did I say "here's a fool proof way to never double buy the same book"?

I said "Amaon has kept me from buying the same book" and it has.

I check my LibraryThing account rather than my Calibre, because sometimes it may be a month since I've last connected my Sage to my PC to pull down all the latest books I've bought.

---

I completed my Amazon migration long ago, but my uncle called me in a panic some time last week when he was made aware of the deadline, and was very concerned about losing access to the 180 or so books he's bought from Amazon since 2010. So I went over the weekend to help him get everything bulk-downloaded and imported into Calibre.

Ironically, since I ended up using the Kindle for PC method, we probably didn't even need to do this head of the deadline. But it felt good to help him get it done, anyway. He's now considering getting a Kobo when he Kindle Oasis finally gives up the ghost.

Reminds me that I need to take another stab at setting up K4PC in Wine on my Linux machine. I'm mostly out of the Kindle ecosystem except for comics, because Amazon's Comixology acquisition simply made them head-and-shoulders above the competition on that front, and I still buy them regularly when on sale.

It's good to hear that works. I've tried it in the past by my windows computer kept updating the Kindle app EVEN THOUGH I had checked the don't update option.

I have been using the D&T for a long time now. Over the years, I'd frequently have to rejigger my systems and relearn all over again how to get this process working.

I finally had it stable and documented and it sucks to have that removed.

It works *reasonably* well, although I'd say if you still have a K4PC 1.17 or 1.19 version, that seemed like the superior experience to me than using the 2.4. Everything my uncle's PC downloaded and imported was in KFX format, which is kind of a pain to work with even if it's DRM-free. Calibre doesn't seem to like opening the format on its own, and it doesn't work with the KindleUnpack plugin, so you have to convert it instead.

1.17/1.19 (when I had it working) brought the vast majority of books over as AZW3's instead, which Calibre has a much easier time with. But it's better than nothing, I suppose.

There are ways around that. Check out the sticky "Dealing with Kindle books in calibre" in the calibre forum.

I am so happy I spent time over the last few years organising my library. For me there was no mad rush to download ebooks before a deadline.

Though I haven't figured out what happens with future purchases from Amazon. I thought K4PC would be a workaround, but I am on v2.6 which is the wrong version for dedrm'ing books, but the older version refused to download my newer purchases, so it seems that option has gone also. Did anybody else have a problem with K4PC refusing to download ebooks until updating to the latest version?
