If they switch to LCP is there anywhere else to buy books aside from indie stores like Smashwords? I suppose I'd just stop buying books entirely and read what I already have.

On the bright side, the switch would probably lead to the current LCP version being defeated.

It could be hosted in a country where they don't much care about the legality of such things. Like some pirate sites are hosted.

There's Google Play Books, but it doesn't have nearly the selection.

That's what I was afraid of. Hopefully it won't happen and we can carry on supporting Kobo.

From what I've seen, Kobo will continue supporting RMSDK for Adobe ADEPT DRM for quite a while. If they dropped Adobe's ADEPT DRM, that would cause major issues for most of their North American library users.

Ah, that's a good point. Hopefully that means LCP will only be added as an option and won't replace ADE.

It may only be late February, but I believe we already have a strong contender for Understatement of the Year.

Too true, alas. I have Google Play credit that I need to use, but finding a book on my wishlist in the bookstore is a challenge, to put it mildly.

Interestingly, there has to be about 200 books I've purchased and haven't read. I was a sucker for those $1/$5 deals for "the complete boxed set". And lots of books I MEANT to read, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I'm probably good for 5 or six years of never buying another books just to get through these.

But who am I kidding, I will still buy new books.

But Amazon will be the vendor of last resort now. I hear Kobo's books are still able to be liberated.

But did you survive Spelling 101?

Just kidding.

Note the comments, I am also sceptical.
This is part of the reply someone in that thread got from NetGalley.

Quote:
Our development of the NetGalley Reader and our move from Adobe to LCP are all part of NetGalley’s ongoing security efforts
I knew is was BS about the lack of use of Adobe DRM and was about the DRM being used. I've said this before.

I cannot see Kobo going for LCP instead of Adobe DRM or a lot of Kobo users will lose access to a lot of eBooks and that includes Overdrive. I have eBooks bought from other stores other then Amazon or Kobo. If I did not remove DRM, none of them would ever be readable on a Kobo.

At worst case, maybe add LCP and keep RMSDK. But that could be the death of KePub if Kobo changed the software that read KePub for one that does LCP.

It could be that KePub goes away and Thorium replaces it.
