Sharing books by email - SMPTAuthenticationError

I got Calibre up and successfully running. Converted a couple of my epub books to azw3 (I hope that's good for my 9th gen Oasis - just guessing). I tried using my usual gmail, but I got the same type of message, did a search, found people have all sorts of problems using gmail for STK, so I took the calibre direction and opened a GMX email and followed the tabs in calibre.

Here is the message when I do the "test":

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "calibre/gui2/wizard/send_email.py", line 236, in test_email_settings
File "calibre/utils/smtp.py", line 187, in sendmail
File "smtplib.py", line 750, in login
File "smtplib.py", line 739, in login
File "smtplib.py", line 662, in auth
smtplib.SMTPAuthenticationError: (535, b'Authentication credentials invalid')

I have done a search and am trying to learn and make sense, but do not understand any of this yet. It does seem to be a common with sending documents through email, and not a calibre thing. I hope it's something simple and someone can help me with this.

Just checked my gmx email and found this message. It took awhile. I did not get it last night when I was trying all this stuff.

You have recently attempted to integrate your GMX mailbox into an email programme such as Outlook or your smartphone's pre-installed email app. Unfortunately, this attempt was not successful. We believe the possible reason for why this occurred can be found in the details below.

The POP3/IMAP/SMTP protocols which are required for email programmes are deactivated by default for safety reasons. This is to prevent unauthorised persons from accessing your mailbox via POP3/IMAP/SMTP.

The protocols will also be deactivated if you have set up your GMX mailbox for use in an email programme before, but you have not used it for a long period of time.

To use this function, you must set up the protocols or reactivate them in your mailbox settings. You will find step-by-step instructions in the GMX Help Section.

Otherwise, we recommend using the GMX App for iOS or Android.

Now the big problem is that when I go to my email tab in gmx, there is no "settings" tab. I looked all over their help section, saw the screenshot type displays they give. I don't have that. Maybe it's because my account is too new? Just guessing here.

Dead in the water. My Oasis for some unexplainable reason cannot connect with my, or any other computer through a usb. No help from amazon. Oh, how I wish I could just get a Kobo right now. I just want to read.
This application also offers direct access to your mailbox. It does not use the unsafe POP3/IMAP/SMTP protocols.

Thank you for your cooperation.
Your GMX*.*com Team

OK, I got it. The "settings" in gmx is not where they said it was. It is now under the "add email account" in the left hand menu. I enabled POP3/IMAP and there it is, my Dan Simmons book in my Oasis.

I'm a bit embarrassed, but maybe some other non-tech person like me can benefit.

STK uses epub, not azw3. Use the azw3 for USB copy. Also STK gives Amazon a copy and tells them what you might be reading.

I don't think email-to-Kindle is the same as Send-to-kindle. The email is tothe device's email address.

Since all these address are "@kindle.com", of course Amazon might keep track of what is sent, but it isn't obvious that it does and it certainly does not add the book to the cloud book list.

Yes, you are right. Email to Kindle is different, I've not used it except to test some years ago. The sender needs "allow listed" but that used to include just a sending domain and can then be anyone. Of course Amazon gets a copy and sometimes it does convert. STK only sends to your own account and won't accept Kindle formats!

Actually, you can limit the authorization to a full email address. If you supply just "@domain", the system will accept any email from that domain.

I wish I could use usb for side loading. If anyone has any idea why my oasis won't be seen by an operating system (neither linux mint nor windows 10), I'm all ears.

Maybe the USB connector to track cracked on D- or D+ pins?

Make sure it's clean.

Unfortunately I think the Oasis 2 & 3 don't open.

I'm sure it's clean. I doubt very much if there's anything wrong with the usb socket, but I've never tried until now to transfer any data with it, only to charge the reader. The Oasis has lived the life of a book. It sits by my chair waiting to be read. It doesn't go anywhere, get knocked around, gather grime, dust, dirt, etc.

What do you mean by "open" and what is Oasis 2 & 3?

The original Oasis is a bit like a Voyage, similar 6″ screen. I think it can be opened. Possibly release order was Voyage, PW3, Oasis 1.

The 2nd and 3rd versions of the Oasis have a 7″ screen (sort of like Kobo Libra). AFAIK the two later Oasis models don't open.

If you never used the socket for data, maybe it's never worked due to D+ and D- not being soldered, or having a procoat left on. Try more cables and scratching the two inner connections with a pin.

Edit: I did have an Oasis 2 (32G + 3G version) and I still have a Kobo Libra and Kobo Libra 2.

Open as in take apart to replace a battery (really a cell) or otherwise see the insides.
