The problem of the Paperwhite being too thin can be solved with a thick enough cover.

lol i been reading my partners paperwhite ( side note my kindle oasis that died was ok before the manual update problem was the magnetic case wont stay in place. but now the oasis is dead . i had the swipe my partners paperwhite which since update doesnt do blue tooth.)

as for the paperwhite v paperwhite signature 11 gen

im slowly reading though everyones answers

my main concerns are
will 16 or 8 gb be enough for books , comics and audio books
will it have usb c
i need a cover that not thin that has a strap to make sure it says shut
i want to back up my books keep them safe (i have some .lit and .pdf etc )

i also watch a video that lets the kindle use libby app so want to explore that
id like a 6.8 or 7 inch screen ( oasis is 7 inch and partners paperwhite screen is 6 inch

i liked the oasis because of the buttons but heard there not much choice with kobo and to be honest i can’t remember how to use calibra to convert from kindle to kobo format

since the changes all my kindle books want to load into apple books app which is annoying.

so while i catch up i thought id add this

Given that you are in the UK, if you want to use Overdrive, then you need a Reader that handles ePub. Overdrive does not support the Kindle outside of the US.

After buying Kindles generation after generation, this i sone of the things that pushed me to Kobo. There are new readers on the market, and Amazon isn't taking it particularly well.

What I was expecting is for the next generation of Kindles to have an updated Scribe-type device (same size, but with added functions) which we got, but also a Paperwhite-sized device you could write on. And there's no reason I could think of that both of them couldn't have been in color.

Frankly, I didn't think they'd come out with a color device right now, because in terms of color saturation, Kaleido 3 isn't much to write home about. But if they were just going to make a Kaleido 3 device anyway, there's no reason they couldn't have made it pen-enabled. I recently got a Kobo Libra Colour, and it's not perfect by any means, but I think it shows a weakness in Amazon's strategy. If I were buying a reader now, i'd definitely take a serious look at Kobo.

As to the warning about the PW6, it is valid if the poster plans to sell/give away/trade in their older Kindle and use only the PW6, AND also buys most of their ebooks from Amazon. It will be much more difficult to liberate their purchases then. Of course, buying an ereader of another brand won't help with liberating Amazon ebooks either. But buying a PW5 instead of PW6 (like the OP wants to do) would certainly help.
you no that exactly what i was thinking and why i got a paperwhite signture edition 11th gen ( needed more memory as sometimes i read comics and listen to audiobooks) usually id go for the more up to date version

my partners happy to have his paperwhite back.

I doubt that you will ever find support for Kindles in the public library system outside the USA. Just too expensive for the library and in countries where the libraries consider user privacy important, having the ebook fulfilled outside of the library system is a nightmare. Unlike an ePub loan where I can download the .acsm file from the library and then use ADE to fulfill the loan on my personal computer, a Kindle library loan must be fulfilled through Amazon.

If you think that Amazon is not mining those library loans for customer information, one relative of mine who lives in the USA and who borrowed several library books on pregnancy would be happy to disagree. They were flooded with Amazon's directed email advertising— the "We found something you might like" emails—trying to sell baby clothing, furniture, diapers (disposable and washable), breast pumps, bottles, etc. for months.

Doing a quick search, it appears that Amazon doesn't charge extra for library loans, and it looks like Overdrive is already supported by UK libraries. So why would it be too expensive?

Perhaps because the libraries are charged by Amazon for each and every loan? You really think Amazon is offering that service out of the kindness of Jeff Bezos' heart?

Last time I talked to an American librarian, the cost was $0.08-0.12 for each library loan plus Amazon's bandwidth fees which depends on the size of the ebook file.

Strange that this hasn't come out with all the talk about overdrive library/ebook borrowing?

As a counter example:

https://www.reddit.com/r/LibbyApp/co...nd_my_library/

And it is interesting that there are concerns about privacy and ebook library loans, for example Canada, but library loans through Kobo are fine in Canada (and the U.K.)
