What to do with long sub-titles
Some of the books I have are tagged with excessively long sub-titles. For examples:
Language City: The Fight to Preserve Endangered Mother Tongues in New York The Wide Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition, First Contact and the Fateful Final Voyage of Captain James Cook Is there a better way to deal with these than stashing them in Comments? I note that that .mp3 has both Title and Sub-title tags. Would this be a reasonable request for e-books? |

Custom column. Text will work, but I prefer these settings.
I display it in full in book-details. In the book list I have the column shrunk to minimum with an icon. Last edited by ownedbycats; 12-16-2024 at 12:14 PM. |

Kobo supports a Subtitle (from a designated column that you set in the Driver. Note this is transferred upon the second connect)
First thing I do after importing to Calibre is Kruft removal / relocation. eg 'a novel' or other things that have a Calibre place Series go there. Novel ->Tags (if you care). Boxed Set ->tags In addition, I 'singular' things like Mysteries (if it is needed in the title). This book is ONE MYSTERY in a series. Mystery is a Genre, so it may not BE NEEDED in the title. 'Mystery of the Broken Lock' stays. 'Broken Locket Mystery' removed (It is Tagged as a Mystery) I thin some things. The complete Series -> (Complete). Shorten some things. The only time I DO leave title stuff is when needed as a Tie Breaker. (The title is only the Series: Name Bk1, Name Bk2...) There is no one size answer. |

I just move it to the "Comments" section in quotes.
It just seems simplest that way. |

![]() But there's something that bothers me about it. If I press F2 on the cell I don't get a dialogue box to enter/edit the value, instead I get a very short inline edit box. I understand why, the long text editor only pops if the column is defined as having HTML mark up… which I don't want in a subtitle. So I can either enter/edit in the semi-darkness or use MDE and cut and paste between the Title (which more often than not contains the subtitle) and Subtitle fields which in my case are on different Tab panels. Such is life. BR |
