I do like the PW5. But I do not like the PW6. The reason I don't like the PW6 is due to no D&T and MTP.

Also, the PW5 has gotten faster page turns with 5.17.1 and 6.8" vs 7" makes no noticeable difference.

I only said page turns were faster on the PW5 and the video does say page turns are pretty much the same. Yes, other things are faster due to the faster processor, but page turns are no longer faster.

i know the paperwhite signature edition ( 11 gen) can use the libby. and it comes in denim blue and other colours . also both have usb c which is important as i want to not carry a bag of cables around

i dont want ads . just not sure which to get.

If the differences that have been pointed out between the standard Paperwhite and the SE are not important to you, I would choose the cheaper option. And the 2024 generation is also very good, especially in contrast. Personally I prefer the colour tone of the PW5 screen (whiter) to the PW6 (more yellow), but the contrast of the fonts on the PW6 is better. And the screen is a bit bigger (which is indifferent to me). The controversy over other issues is inconsequential for most Kindle users. I use my PW5 exactly the same as my PW6 (although I certainly never use a USB cable to transfer my books because I find it particularly cumbersome). Both seem to me to be excellent devices. Whichever you choose, you're going to get it right.

As I said before, the difference in size to 6.8" and 7" screen is negotiable. Unless the two were side-by-side, you would not notice the difference. My previous Kobo was 6.8" and now it's 7".

The issues raised here could be consequential for the OP. We won't know this until the OP responds.

But if I had to choose between being inside the wall or outside, I'd choose to be inside. Simply because it gives me more options. If being outside the wall gave me something special I would consider it, but I can't find a benefit that I can't have by being inside.

While STK may be a viable or even preferable alternative for you, I certainly wouldn't want to use it, at all, ever (and yes, I've used it in the past, so I know what it's like). It's not an alternative for me personally. And I know I'm not the only one here with that opinion. So it's not true there is a viable alternative for everyone who wants to sideload. Until Amazon fixes the vanishing books issue, there IS an issue with sideloading and yes, it should be mentioned unless the OP specifically says they're never going to sideload via USB.

For me, being inside a walled garden means I cannot liberate my ebooks, to make personal backups, to change the formatting, to read them on any device/app I want. Those are major disadvantages for me, which outweigh any conceivable advantages by lightyears.

YMMV. I'm well aware many or even most users don't care about DRM removal, personal backups, using Calibre and so on.

I am very happy for individual users to point out personal drawbacks they may encounter in any e-reader, even if they have not been explicitly raised by the author of the publication. The more information the better.

Can't I do that if I have a Kindle e-reader? Exactly the same as with a Kobo or PocketBook e-reader. There is no difference in that respect.

Do you use the download & transfer option to back up your books? If so, 2024 Paperwhites don't have it, so you'll need to keep your Oasis registered to your account. If you're planning on selling or trading in the Oasis, be aware you won't be able to use Download & Transfer with 2024 Paperwhites.

Of course. Merely using a Kindle device doesn't mean being inside a walled garden. Generally it means not being able to use your purchased content outside the garden. If you don't buy from Amazon, you're not in their garden.

One makes one's choices from the available and viable options.

This is a "don't put beans up your nose" issue. Sideloading via USB and keeping a Kindle offline I suspect is not mainstream. One cannot possibly come up with every possible issue to warn off potential purchasers, nor should one. It's up to the purchaser to identify their parameters. I see what seems to me to be a lot of FUD in these threads when a hapless poster just wants some reassurance or a nudge in the right direction. Something that's really easy-peasy becomes fraught and it's so unnecessary and counterproductive.
