There is no such option. That option is not available for the new Kindle e-readers, nor for e-readers of any other brand. Let's just say that buying a Kobo Libra Colour instead of a Kindle Colorsoft is not going to make it any easier for me.
The bold part is what threw me. That option has never been available for D&T and directly transferring them to other ereaders; conversion and most likely DRM stripping has always been involved (except maybe in very limited cases).

Going back to one of your earlier statements that also threw me:

Quote:
What Amazon does not have is the option to "download and transfer" via USB your books on any Kobo e-reader. There is no e-reader on the market today that allows you to do that, neither the new Kindle models nor any other e-reader of any other brand.
That shipped sailed a long time ago.

eBooks you can D&T can have the DRM removed and then the eBook can be converted to ePub. It's as simple as that. Same as ePub downloaded from Kobo can have the DRM removed and the ePub converted to KF8 or KFX for a Kindle.

All you need is calibre properly setup to do this.

I am now buying a Kobo Libra 2 (following your advice not to buy a Kindle Paperwhite 2024 because it doesn't have the "D&T" option for Amazon books) and I want to transfer via USB the books I have bought on Amazon. How do I do it?

You need to remove the DRM and convert them. Do you have the deDRM plugin installed in Calibre?

As far as I know, you can. I don't have a 2024 Kindle to test this.

Yes, you can. So what difference does it make that the Kindle Paperwhite 2024 doesn't have the "D&T" function of Amazon books? The Kobo Libra 2 doesn't have it either. To transfer Amazon books to a Kobo Libra 2 you have to remove the DRM from those books first. And if you remove the DRM you can still send them via USB to a Kindle Paperwhite 2024. So changing the brand of e-reader for that reason alone is totally absurd. And that's what I'm trying to explain.

What you are missing is that you can buy eBooks in ePub from other shops. You are not forced to buy from Amazon.

If your only eink Kindle is a 2024 model without the option to use Download & Transfer, removing the DRM from your Amazon ebooks is more difficult and may not even succeed at all (for example, if you use a MacBook instead of Windows and your only Kindle device is a 2024 Paperwhite). That's the reason people have been suggesting not to buy 2024 Kindles. Of course, for someone who never removes DRM from their purchases, it doesn't make any difference.

Edit: and yes, with a Kobo you can buy ebooks from any store selling epubs without having to remove the DRM. With a Kindle it's Amazon and maybe a couple of other stores selling ebooks in .mobi format.

You cannot by ePub with DRM from Barnes & Nobel or Apple. A Kobo will not handle the DRM.

And if your only e-reader is a Kobo Libra 2 the problem is the same.

The problem is not the same. You buy eBooks from Kobo, eBooks.com, or Google Play Books. Then you have ePub where you can remove the DRM.

That is precisely what I do. I buy my books in ePub format from my favourite bookshop, remove the DRM (if they have it) and send them to my Kindle e-readers.

Why mix things up? We are talking about removing DRM from Amazon books. What is the difference in difficulty between having a Kindle Paperwhite 2024 or a Kobo Libra 2? Is it easier to remove DRM from Amazon books if you only have a Kobo Libra 2 than if you only have a Kindle Paperwhite 2024?

Of course not. But people whose only reader is Kobo Libra 2 are far less likely to buy ebooks from Amazon than someone with a Kindle. Say, a person decides to buy a new Paperwhite and trades in or sells their older Kindle. They happily continue buying ebooks from Amazon as they have always done... and then they discover they can no longer use D&T to liberate their ebooks.

Whereas someone who had a Kindle and now decides to get a Kobo and read their Amazon ebooks on that, presumably does their research into liberating their Amazon purchases before selling their Kindle.
