thanks. I dug up an air can and blew some compressed air into the port. That might've done it? I'll give it more time to see how it goes.

Cleaning out the port seems to have cleared up the problem (YAY!). For future reference, what's the best way to get files (not just books for the nickle reader) onto the kobo via wifi? Thanks

FWIW I've never had this happen since moving to USB-C (Mabook Air, USB-C to USB-C cable). I hope your apparent solution turns out to be a real solution.
