![]() I have a few old Kindles, one of which is my main: a Kindle 4. I like the buttons and have even replaced the motherboard. It is not registered to any Amazon account, as I use KOReader and have multiple Kindles (other's registered to Amazon). Usually in aeroplane mode, one day I connected it to Wifi. After a few minutes, I got "This device is not authorised as a test Kindle by the developer of this item. Please contact the developer." And then my jailbreak was disabled. I did not attempt registering the Kindle (nor do I plan to, it's old), which some have suggested may cause this error. It's on the latest firmware for K4, jailbroken and I've used RenameOTAbin and ShutTheBackDoor (BinaryRenamer I tested as non-functional on this K4). So it's not getting any OTA updates. What gives? How can I prevent it losing its jailbreak when connected to WiFi? There's a couple other people over the years who have had the same issue as me:
I used the same solution they did and reinstalled the jailbreak, but this is quite annoying, as it means I can't wirelessly transfer books. Is it because the K4 jailbreak uses revoked dev certs or something? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? |

This post was the first thing on Google when I searched for this exact issue again with another Kindle 4 - connect it to Wifi and almost immediately it disables the jailbreak and a book called "Test Kindle Installation Result" from Amazon appears in the library.
It's a pity the Kindle 4 models cannot be used with Wifi because of this. Don't suppose anyone knows of a way to avoid this? I have disabled logging with BinaryRenamer and blocked updates with ShutTheBackDoor. It still happened. |

You have to downgrade with Kubrick to firmware 4.1.1. The required firmware is included in the Kubrick iso.
Had it on 4.1.3 and got "This device is not authorised as a test kindle". Aftre downgrading it worked but I had to reinstall some packages so KUAL would start again. The downgrade didn't delete any data but it stopped KUAL and I think also some kindlets from working, so I had to reinstall some stuff. I had already installed Back Door Lock previously, and maybe reinstalled that. Didn't try without it activated so I don't know if it's needed. Last edited by dryes; 03-20-2025 at 04:51 AM. |

The latest firmware (4.1.4) seems required too. There might be a solution that doesn't require registering, but I haven't tried it yet: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...29#post4545829 |

This is still an issue I'm facing in Nov 2025, and I've been experimenting with hosts editing to try and block the key revocation on my Kindle 4s
https://github.com/mitchellurgero/ki...mazon/issues/2 I have also been asking around, but without luck. My Kindles are indeed not registered with Amazon, and the jailbreak dev keys are revoked every time they touch the internet. There's other people facing the same issue historically: - https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=185444 and on 4PDA but none have been able to resolve it, only the short-term solution of rejailbreaking by reinstalling the dev keys works, and then the device can never use Wifi. |

I remember someone else having a similar issue, logging to an Amazon account solved the problem.

Thank you, qadzek, for telling me about LunarEclipse's work - that has solved my problem. Amazon login was not needed.
I had been experimenting with blocking Amazon hosts, and LunarEclipse had a lot of new addresses, and now my jailbreak is no longer disabled after adding them to my hosts file: https://github.com/Darthagnon/kindle-kual-blockamazon https://codeberg.org/LunarEclipse/kindle-block-amazon Thread solved! |
