7.2 issue with image links...

I'm back to not being able to make head or tail of it

From an install of regular 7.4 on C I can see images on C and H, but not on D.
From an install of portable 7.4 on D I can see images on D but not on C or H.
From an install of portable 7.4 on H I can see images on C and H, but not on D.

From an install of portable 6.29 on C I can see images on C, H, and D.
From an install of portable 6.29 on D I can see images on C, H, and D.
From an install of portable 6.29 on H I can see images on C, H, and D.

That suggests it's not a flaky drive or a permissions issue.

By 'see the images' I mean see image files in Book Details that were embedded in Comments via the Link tool File button in MDE.

I'll have another look at it tomorrow

@Kovid - Just noticed a major difference between 6.29 and 7.4, which I'm assuming is related to the original issue:

In 6.29 I can always see the image that is embedded into Comments in Metadata Edit in the Normal view, viz



In 7.4 I can never see the image that is embedded into Comments in Metadata Edit in the Normal view, including books where I can see the image in Book details.



I'll have a look at what happens in a custom long text column.

In 6.29 I get the image in Normal view when I edit the cell:



In 7.4 I get a small white square in Normal view when I edit the cell:

I can reproduce the issue with the comments editor that will be fixed. Not seeing the issue with book details however.

Before doing any more on the Book details issue I'll wait to see what happens in 7.5 with the comments editor fix. I created a separate library for the issue, so it's not in my way.

FWIW: If I change the links I cannot see from:

<p><img src="file:///path_to_jpg></p>

to:

<p><a href="file:///path_to_jpg">Cover source</a></p>

I can click 'Cover source' in book details and the image pops up in my default image viewer. Incidentally, this is how I normally deal with alternate covers.

I'm not sure which installed version it was where this behavior started showing up, I just noticed it with 7.2.

I haven't tried putting the alternate files into the Data folder, as I still don't know exactly how to use it (and I've been doing it "My" way for so long, it's just old hat...), so can't comment on whether that works or not.

As anticipated Version 7.5 has solved the comments edit issue

And for me at least, 7.5 overcomes the original issue of images sometimes not appearing the Book details. All my previous tests work as expected in 7.5.

The acid test will be when @CloudReader gives it spin.

A suggestion: an option to shrink the embedded image to fit the BD window. If memory serves that's why I decided to use 'a ref' links rather than 'img' links.

I noticed @CloudReader has a width="300" in the image link code he posted.

Given most folks probably don't change the BD panel size or position perhaps 'Image width" could be incorporated into the L&F->Book details settings, or in the Create Link dialogue beside the "Treat the URL as an image" checkbox.

I will stick to using 'a ref' links, sometimes I want very large tiffs and if they're embedded they have a negative impact on performance.

Not a fan of putting in a fixed width for images. It becomes hardcoded and difficult to change in the future should you want to for whatever reason. Cooments ar enot rendered only in the book details panel, they are rendered in int he content server, the go to metadata page in the viewer as well.
