Stumped on USBnet on Kindle3
Ok, I've been trying to see if I can SSH into my Kindle3 WiFi to check to see if I can run the Online screensaver extension:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=236104 I have KUAL and the USBNetwork and everything else installed from here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=88004 I can connect to the Kindle via SSH over Wifi, but as the docs suggested, it's asking for a password for root. I've tried to go the telnet route, but the connection is refused. I can see the device when I tether it via USB with the IP of something like 169.254.151.40, but still no dice on the telnet side of things. I can mount the kindle if I turn off the USBnet and get access to the usbnet config file where I can update the IP address to match what is on my network, but I still can't seem to make a connection to reset (or set) a password for the root account. So, I'm not sure what I'm missing or if it's not possible with my device. TIA! |

You are missing private key authorization key pair. One on your host machine, where your sftp/ssh points to, another on Kindle itself in /usbnet/etc/. See readme files for details.

Should I generate a new one or can I use my current id_rsa.pub file? Wasn't sure what the best route would be. |

As long as it is the same key although you need it in two different formats. Encrypted .pub key is for sftp/ssh on PC, authorized_keys (don’t remember exact name) in plain text is for Kindle.
It is easy to setup a new pair in PuTTy-gen. (Also, for security reasons it is not recommended to use the same keys for different devices) |

Ok, so I started fresh and I am able to telent into my Kindle 3. But now how do I go about either:
a.) Resetting or clearing the root password so I can SSH into it over Wifi or b.) generating a pub key and installing it on the kindle. I know how to go about this in the past, but not sure what the best route to take Overall, my goal is to have a save a screenshot from Homeassistant as a screensaver. I'm going off of this: https://github.com/sibbl/hass-lovelace-kindle-4 I feel that I'm getting close, but just need to figure out the other steps. TIA! |
