I'm currently so stressed that my eczema is flaring up. And tomorrow's yearly check up at the doctor will be fun, I'm expecting my blood pressure to be higher than normal, though I did lose a bit of weight these last couple of months. |

Calling it a night. I was just waiting to get a text from my daughter letting me know that she'd gotten back to her apartment after traveling across the country, back from her visit here. It's late Sunday night (very early Monday morning) after one of the busiest times for traveling all year here in the States, and there were a few delays.

Just finished assembling a set of closet shelves - with the relentless help of Pixie cat - who repeatedly tried to bat the Allen wrench down the heating vent - and am now sitting against the heating pad.
Is there a cut off age for assembling DIY furniture? I think my joints may have reached it. |

I have a serious question--if you've completely forgotten what TYPE of mattress you need--firm, soft, feather-top, not, yadda--how the holy hell do you figure it out? I can no longer sleep in my mattress. If I do, if I spend more than 2, 2.5 hours in it, when I wake up I'm literally in tears, due to pain. (No sympathy, folks, I'm just explaining why I gotta do something here.) I used to get all my mattresses from the companies that provided them to our hotels, right? But, that was back in "the day" and I don't do that any more. And I'm reasonably sure that my FF&E guy, the furniture provision company, has been sold to people that no longer know me and would say "who the hell are you and why should you only pay $X for a mattress?" (sigh--I used to get smoking deals on them...sigh.) I know I used to get feather/pillow-tops, deep ones, like 17"-18" deep. But my back has, well...not gone so good the last few years. I have some arthritis issues in the Facet joint and some other crap. Yowchy crap. The mere idea of laying on some mattress for 20 minutes or so in some damned store seems idiotic to me. And I doubt that either I want to try to lie on some mattress in a store for 5+ hours, or that they want me to, either. Ya know? Thoughts, gang? Speaking of crap that we oughtn't be doing at 65+? For over 30 years we've had good contact with one of our suppliers. He started off supplying batteries and Christmas lights, but later he also started supplying light bulbs (incandescent and LED) and extension cords. He worked for his father, who has retired a couple of years ago. He would come every other Tuesday, to bring our order and to have a cup of tea and chat for a while. I always looked forward to those Tuesdays. It wasn't always about business we chatted, but also personal things. After the fire ten years ago he came over a couple of days to help empty the basement.
Even after our store closed in July he came by every other Tuesday, just to catch up. Last week I was house hunting when he came by. And next week I won't be home either because we're visiting two houses that day. And it's the last time he's visiting our old house. Because two weeks later my parents have moved into their vacation accommodation the day before. He has promised to come visit them there with his wife and he'll also come visit once my parents' new apartment is ready, once my sister and I move I'll probably invite them to visit, too. I'll miss the fortnightly visits. In the past most of our suppliers had representatives/salespersons come visit us regularly. Before email and web shops they came to get the order and show the new things. After most suppliers got their own web shops your contact person might come by once a year to show new things. But since Covid that is something of the past. We have two suppliers (both family businesses) that regularly call, to see if we need anything and ask if we've seen their emails with offers and new products, but other, bigger, suppliers you have to contact yourself. I can understand why that stopped, but it's a shame that there aren't any salespersons/representatives on the road anymore, at least in our business. So that you see them at least once a year. |

Whoo. Shortest after-dinner walk in forever. It was just so darned cold out there. I couldn't wait to get back inside. Where it's also pretty chilly, but not quite that cold. Oh, I don't like winter (and it's still fall for another three weeks).

It hasn't really set in that today is my last day living at home. Tomorrow morning I'm moving in with my sister.
This morning I'm helping my parents with a couple of things and then I've got to pack my own stuff. Yesterday I packed most of my clothes. Today I'm packing the other things I'm taking with me, tomorrow morning I'll pack the last things. Tomorrow the goal is to finish moving my before noon. I think it'll take two trips; one for my packed things and one trip for the low bookshelves I want to take with me. Then I have to carry all those things up two stairs and unpack. I'll still come here every day until my parents move. I still have to pack and put into storage a bunch of things, that needs to be done next week. On the 11th my parents can move into their vacation cottage, but that isn't available until 4 pm. So we most likely are going to make one or two trips over there to bring most of their stuff. And move the last things, including my mother's chair and the cats, on the 12th. On the 13th and 14th the movers are coming to pack up and put into storage all my parents things. I don't expect they need me (my father will be here), so I might go to my vacation cottage and unpack things for my parents and keep my mother company. |

And by the time you read this--you will have already spent your last night at your "home" forever. Wild, eh?

But everything that I was able to pack is packed. So I'm now putting everything down in the store so we can load it easily tomorrow. Taking everything down isn't fun, but I'm looking even less forward to having to carry everything up two stairs tomorrow. That'll be about a dozen trips up and down those stairs. Though the stairs at my sister's apartment building are a lot more comfortable to walk than those in our (old) house. |

Moved and unpacked. I've set up my Google Home and Chromecast and I've even sorted my embroidery floss into the new drawers I got for it. My sheets are now in the washing machine.
Right now we're trying to decide what to watch tonight. Meanwhile I'm counting down until the 15th when all the fuss is over and I can take it easy for a couple of weeks. |

Did you bring something, anything, to help you settle down into sleeping in the new place? I mean, no two places tend to be the same, noise-wise, either in volume or type or the like and of course, light. Did you bring a sound machine or white-noise maker, just in case and maybe a sleep mask? Oh and if you use them, earplugs? Hitch |

But my earplugs are within reach, I've taking my CBD (helps to sleep deeper) and my valerian/magnesium pill (helps me fall asleep faster). As usual I'll listen to a podcast when falling asleep (keeps my mind quiet) and I'm about to start my just-before-bed ritual of listening to metal and playing a couple of rounds of Mahjong. There are two things that might mess up my sleep; my new mattress and the temperature (it's a lot warmer than I've been recently used to). Tomorrow another busy afternoon is planned, but at least we can all take it easy in the morning (no alarm!). |
