I don't even have the Recycle Bin. I keep it in the system tray.

My computers don't have any application icons or "not quite deleted" icons since I run a window manager instead of a desktop and I use the rm command to delete files.

Few minutes ago I happened to read the WikiP entry on SAA-CUA (wanted a date), this seems à propos to recent posts.

Quote:
The third edition of CUA took a radical departure from the first two by introducing the object-oriented workplace. This changed the emphasis of the user's interactions to be the data (documents, pictures, and so on) that the user worked on. The emphasis on applications was removed with the intention of making the computer easier to use by matching users' expectations that they would work on documents using programs (rather than operating programs to work on documents).
It's my observation that most people didn't read the email… maybe they were shirking at home.

I've seen MiniBin mentioned a few times… but I'm reluctant to download programs that have no presence of their own… especially when the authors link takes me to somewhere my blocker says I shouldn't wanna be.

Might give it a spin.

By the end of the day there'll be notes, scraps, clippings, screenshots etc… almost all of which gets chucked in the bit bucket (shift+del).

My problem with associating file type with applications is that I typically use several apllications with any given file type.

I have the "Show desktop icons" option unchecked and a solid black background on my desktop.

Program shortcuts and cascading folder menus sit either in Quick Launch bar, standalone True Launch Bar (left and right panels) or Open Shell Start Menu.

I feel I'm in good company here because great minds think alike.

MiniBin is not quite what I want, I want something I can pin in the taskbar so that I can drag a file onto it; afaik tray icons can't take DnD.

But it's provided a sledge for our newish Premier - MiniBin Minns.

The post-Win7 Open With setting is one of the most detestable OS implementations I've ever faced.

There are some alternative tools like Context Menu Manager and OpenWith Enhanced, but they're not perfect, so I often resort to using Win + R, typing shell:sendto, and placing some program shortcuts there - especially when on workstations where one can't run those tools without user elevation.

You have to click 2-3 times before you get the option to "choose another app..." (and I despise the word app).

I avoid the problem by avoiding the use of point and click devices - I can do most things much faster and more accurately via the keyboard… including Open with settings.

If you despise the word I'm surprised you even deign to type it

While I avoid the use of the keyboard if possible - my typing precision has always been pretty subpar despite having learned to touch type in my youth (and quickly forgotten it - I was too lazy to continue with practicing). I can never remember keyboard shortcuts either, even the ones I've been using for years. A good mouse or touchpad suits me much better.

At one point I wrote my own "lean and mean" Program Manager.
Thanks for the link but I jumped the Windows ship a long time ago. Linux all the way. No DM just icewm and the frequently used programs on the task bar.

As to the rest, I didn't expect so much support. I was preparing to put my asbestos thermal on.
