I prefer reading with the light set to zero when there is enough ambient light. In these situations there is little difference between having the light at zero and where I would set the light at. I like not having the light in my eyes and hope it helps preserve the battery.

I’m only able to do this with the Voyage. The background on all my other front lit Kindles is darker, more grayish and muddier. I always need to use the front light with those.

My experience was entirely opposite. At the time I got the Oasis 2, I still had my Voyage. I compared them closely, and sharpness/contrast was roughly equal, the difference between them was that the Voyage screen was very, very unpleasantly cold, while the Oasis screen is not.

I kept the Oasis 2, sold the Voyage, no regrets of any kind. I love the screen on my Oasis 2, I only wish it had the warm light option.

I don't doubt your experience though, as we all know that screens can vary. For instance, my Forma, bought a year or so after the initial release, does not have the dread "stripe" effect.

I read that as not using the light as much as possible and keeping the light off.

I can't read with the light off. The screen is just too dim and ugly. I admit I don't usually read in very good light (natural or artificial). I'm a night owl and read mostly in the evening and at night, always indoors; and my rooms are not brightly lit.
I'm used to reading with the light off. I've had a Sony Reader since the days of the PRS-500 where there was no light. I actually prefer the background not to be white.

Of course, at night, I turn on the frontlight on the reader, like a sane person would That said, I try to keep it as low as I can (10 out of 100 on KOReader, 10 out of 24?25? on the Oasis, etc. - my Oasis has a really weird brightness curve for the light)
When I read with the light on my Libra 2, I use a light level of 3.

One of the poorest screens is the PW1.

I too was used to reading on unlit screens - I read for almost 5 years on two Kindle 4 NTs with no light. But I never liked their gray background. After I got my first ereader with frontlight (the Voyage) I never looked back.

Funny how preferences differ.

I also started on unlit screen (A Sony 505, and a couple after that). I used clip on book lights.

On other electronics screens, I try to avoid "white" backgrounds. On my lit ereaders, I don't find them too white. For daytime reading, I have my Kobo's light set to 30%.

And yes, to each their own.

I didn't buy an ereader until I saw one with a light (the Nook ST with Glowlight). Saw one in a store one night, went and bought it the next day.

But that's irrelevant given how bad the PW4 screen is.

Yes it is...to you. Not necessarily to others.

Not in Canada. A couple of weeks back, I asked Audible.ca why they didn't support Amazon's eInk Kindles and got the same fluff about needing to do more testing. Pretty much exactly the same wording every time I ask the question.
