Here's what to do.
  1. Go to kobo.com
  2. Move the mouse pointer over my account and select My Books
  3. Find the book you want to download
  4. Click the ... to the right under the cover and select Download
  5. Click Download File
  6. Open the ACSM file in ADE and you'll have your ePub
  7. If the ePub is DRM free, you'll download the ePub without the need for ADE

If you are trying to download a book using an .acsm file, you will need to use an authorized copy of ADE or the DeACSM plugin for calibre. I'm not sure if DeACSM will work on the version of calibre you are running.

If you are trying to get the books from the Kobo Desktop app, you will need to install Obok in calibre (it's part of the DeDRM package).

Thank you @JSWOLF and @DNSB I am unable to load the acsm file into my ADE, as I only have a free account with Adobe and that action seems to require a paid account ??? I did find the books where DNSB previously posted, i.e. C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Kobo\Kobo Desktop Edition\kepub, but I cannot load the files anywhere, not into ADE nor into Calibre - obviously a wrong format ????? I have reinstalled the suggested vs Calibre along with the obok plug-in but still no joy. I have tried to drag and drop the files from \kepub folder to Calibre but not a go. After a wasted day I'm ready to go back to dead tree lol.

No, it doesn't require a paid account. Why exactly are you unable to open the acsm with Adobe Digital Editions? Do you get an error message?

Have you tried de-authorizing and re-authorizing?

No, that is the one thing I have not tried...will do it tomorrow when I'm less flustered Thank you @Sirtel ! I have finally been able to load those files into Calibre but Calibre gives me the "no available format" blurb when I load the raw files from \kepub.

If you load the raw files from \kepub without using Obok, you would have to rename the files to add the .epub extension before loading them into calibre. I used to do this by copying the files to a temporary directory, bulk-renaming them and then deleting after loading into calibre. You would also run into files that have Kobo's DRM which Obok removes.

Thanks everyone for saving my sanity I de/re-authorized ADE, but then ran into the
E_ADEPT_REQUEST_EXPIRED error which had me bamboozled until I re-d/l the acsm file. I had tried to load the previous day's acsm file and that was a no-go. Apparently the acsm files are time-sensitive. After that though, tg it was all downhill. I was able to load the files from ADE library to Calibre and ultimately to my device.
@DNSB Before I installed obok, I did actually add the .epub extension to the raw files, but Calibre did not know what to do with them, so obok in Calibre did the trick. Thanks again all for the help .

Long-time reader, first-time caller. I'm in the same position as the OP, except everything was working fine back in March and now I can't seem to get the DRM off my books so I can share them with my family. As though they're books, that I own.

Although it's possible that there's something hinky with my ADE code, because I found an epub in my Adobe folder from 2018 & I couldn't open it, either. I've installed DeDRM 10.0.3 and DeACSM 0.0.16.

Anyway, I've tried DLing from Kobo.com (desktop) to acsm files into Calibre directly, no dice. I can use the acsm to go to ADE, get an epub, pull the epub into Calibre, no dice.

When I use the Kobo desktop app, the kepub folder has a bunch of weird files with no file types. Can I pull these into Calibre? do I have to give them file extensions, or just do as is?

Should I go through the Kobo app on my phone, somehow?

You need to install and register ADE so DeDRM can get the key.

Oh, I've done that long since, that's how it was working back in March & before. I can see the key in DeDRM & DeACSM.

I finally got my books by plugging my Kobo into my PC and using Obok DeDRM to yoink things from the reader to the computer. Victory!
