Mini Kobo Mini N705 won't allow WiFi set up

Greetings People . . . . purchased a used Kobo Mini N705 and was taught the kiss of death when I tried to update. Contacted Kobo and they pretty much said "Oh Well" . . . Grrrrrr
So I was directed to this forum to learn about a firmware upgrade to work around it and I'm still having troubles. There seems to be some very smart people out here that I'm convinced can help me before this thing becomes a skipping stone in the frigid waters on Lake Huron!
I have uploaded and loaded two different firmware programs (one for the Mini and one for the Glo (non HD) as suggested. Tried the two at different times and nothing. I went as far a reformatting the Kobo through the computer but wonder if that's something I shouldn't have done?
No when I fire up the Mini it goes to the Date and Time selection (AL GOOD), the NEXT to the "scanning for Networks", Once I select the network, it tried to Log In and after about 15 seconds it says "ERROR" Unable to join . . . .
Any suggestions?

I suggest updating the mini to the latest firmware. The problem could be that it's on too old a firmware version. You will have to update it manually.

Here is the site that lists the latest firmware where you can download it. You want to download the Kobo Glo firmware as both the Glo and Mini are version 4 hardware.

I had the same issue with my Mini. The "official" Mini firmware releases ended with version 3.19, which doesn't have the necessary security certificate to log into Kobo's network. So you can't upgrade via WiFi. Kobo Desktop should work, but it kept timing out on me (and, I think, for others).

What I had to do is first download the new firmware (not specifically designated for the Mini). The Kobo Mini is a 4th generation device so, following the link below (also linked by JSWolf), download the latest firmware for the Kobo Glo (also a 4th generation device).

Once you have the firmware downloaded and the zip file opened on your computer, you connect the Mini to the computer and pick upgrade with the Kobo Desktop (even though you're not going to be using the Kobo Desktop). At that point you should have a connection to your computer.

All you do from there is move the contents of the opened zip file to the .kobo directory (the period in front of "kobo" means it's hidden, so if you don't see .kobo change your File Manager to "show hidden files." Once the firmware is copied to the Mini's .kobo directory, unmount and your Mini will upgrade (or should upgrade). Once this new version is installed you'll be able to register via WiFi.

(Sorry if there is too much detail here, I feel it's safer to give too much detail rather than too little.)
