No, I'm not sure. I remember something about entering the serial # in the configuration but can't find anything about that now. Maybe it didn't apply to the Kindle? And if it does then I'm not sure where to find it. So, maybe it is a configuration issue. Or maybe it's something else. I did note that the thread you linked linked to another thread that said DRM removal only worked up to Kindle OS 5.12 but I can't find what version mine is.

If you haven't entered the serial number in the plugin settings, the DRM removal won't work.

Many books are sold without DRM and those will work even if the DRM removal plugin is not properly configured.

The easiest way to find the serial number is in the Devices tab of the Content & Devices page on amazon.com. You can cut/paste from there.

S/N fixed the problem. Thank you. As for the book that it did work on, I'm not sure what the problem with that book was. Since it wouldn't download on Kindle for PC (1.20.1) I assumed it had DRM. My bad (although at least I didn't make an ass out of u).

Interesting. So even DRM free books will be locked to Amazon devices if you need a newer version of K4PC, unless you can Download & Transfer or have an old Android.

No Kindle book published in 2023 will download with an old K4PC, regardless of DRM or lack of it.

It said to not have downloaded with K4PC 1.20.1, but D&T delivered a DRM free book. Unless, of course, it was downloaded to an older device, and the newer device did not have the S/N entered yet. So that one worked, the other only after adding new S/N.

Then it was probably published this year, as that's normal behavior for 2023 books. A book may be DRM-free, but an old Kindle app still won't download it if it was published after January 3.

As Sirtel has stated the inability to download books on older versions of Kindle for PC is tied to the publication date regardless of whether or not it has DRM.

The Kindle DRM situation is complicated. The issue with Kindle firmware newer than version 5.12.1 has to do with books delivered directly to a Kindle device over-the-air and then extracted from the device using USB. Those books will mostly be in KFX format with DRM that cannot be removed by the existing tools.

Obtaining books using Download & Transfer from the Amazon website never uses KFX format regardless of the firmware version involved. It always delivers in a format where DRM removal is possible. The main problem with that is some books are unavailable for Download & Transfer, including those borrowed via Kindle Unlimited.

Is this actually true? What happens if you have an older device, such as my K3? Is such as book then unavailable for wireless transfer, as well? I'm not doubting you, it's just that I haven't seen something explicit in this regard from Amazon. It was my assumption that download and transfer would make available the latest format consistent with the device, tied to the device serial, i.e. if the book in question has enhanced typography, Wordwise etc. and your device is a recent generation, you will get the KFX file, which will give you the full functionality of the book. If you have an older device, that would be KF8, without those enhancements.

I have had no trouble so far this far with any book, this year, and all have been available for download and transfer too but then I have not bought a specific 23 release, with those enhanced features so far yet, either.

Please pardon my cluelessness, I wanted a clarification made

Say my library lends out ebooks using Amazon so they can be sent directly to a Kindle (or really any device you have registered on your Amazon account), but these are not usually Kindle Unlimited books.

From what I understand I need to do something to the Calibre Plug-in for DeDRM in order for the needed meta-data from the Kindle book to be removed.

(or possibly use another program that I may have to pay for?)

I am able to get the files of the book myself using an old version of K4PC, as well as using my Kindle Paperwhites.

Would this be the same process as if I were using Calibre to remove DRM from a Kindle Unlimited book? Or am I completely misunderstanding?

I am able to follow things on here pretty well. I managed to get a stable jailbreak on my old Paperwhite. I think my wires got crossed from trying to parse old/outdated reddit posts. So I am sorry if this is a bit muddled.
