While that is essentially what the "contract" says when you purchase something that is DRMed, contract law should not recognized a unilateral change to a contract as being valid.

Contracts are subsidiary to any local laws. Contracts themselves are not law. Contract Law is the civil law surrounding suing people that break your contract. A "retail" point of sale contract can be the most easily invalid. Business to Business contracts are more easily enforced as there is usually due diligence, lawyer's advice and explicit signing. Sometime B2B contracts are invalid too.

Unilateral changes are hardly ever valid.

Have you read the license on the DRM stuff? The contract can be changed by the vendor at any time for any reason without your having to agree. It is not a valid contract.

Automatic book updates being turned off is still the default as far as I know. I realize that doesn't jive with the "the sky is falling" crowd's current crusade, but ... yeah. Do nothing and you don't have to worry about the evil overlords changing your kindle library without your knowledge. The "cake and eat it too" crowd who want to automatically update all books they want automatically updated (but not the ones they don't want automatically updated) are probably screwed, though.

What I've dome sometimes with a newer eBook is to compare it to the previous one and see what sort of changes were made. Not that I'm worried the text is going to be changed (aka Dahl), but I just an interested to know.

Yeah, but if I was satisfied holding a cover all the time I wouldn't have bothered with an Oasis in the first place: the cover hides the contoured spine and the contoured spine is 50% of the reason the Oasis exists. (The other 50% is the buttons. )

Well, that at least one person can. I have multiple equally valid anecdata saying that several others either can't or think it's far too much bother to be worth it (and this is *despite* having lots of books stuck on there, none of which they can figure out how to switch to any more).

My mother never did thought it was too difficult. She went in not knowing and came out knowing. She was good at following directions and writing down what to do.

People are different. My mother never learned how to use a smartphone and she avoided computers like the plague. She just had zero interest in gadgets. And she was by no means a stupid person.

My dad, OTOH, learned to use smartphones and tablets in his seventies. The difference being that he was interested, while my mom wasn't.

My dad was useless at electronics. But my mom took to them with my help.
