I have a Kindle Voyage and am awaiting a new Kindle Basic, which is already registered to my account. I today bought a book and downloaded it through Manage Your Contents and got an AZW3 file for both my Voyage and the new Kindle. Calibre processed the files without any issues. As long as that stays the same I’m fine.

Nice. Did you get the black or denim?
I'd like to see color make a return to ereaders. You might think different bezel colors would distract, but that hasn't been my experience using a black bezel, a white bezel or a red one on the old Sony I have. |

I got the black. I don’t like coloured bezels tbh. I’m very pleased with it. The screen is lovely. Not quite as good as my Voyage but it’s the closest Amazon have got so far.

For what it's worth, I did finally get my KK3 back in working order. When I hooked it up to my laptop I got an error message that said there was a problem with the drive and did I want to repair it. Once that was fixed I did a reset, which looked like it froze about 15% in. So I tried to reset it a dozen times, and finally gave up and went to bed. The next morning it was fully functional again, including the wifi. Go figure. So as long as azw2 exists as a format to download to this Kindle I'm all set.
ETA: it's only got about 10 books on it now and about 2 GB of available storage so the drive must have gone bad at some point. I only use it for downloading books in azw2 format to my laptop though so I don't care. Last edited by NNolan; 02-28-2023 at 08:14 PM. |

It's interesting that Amazon so far seems to have chosen to continue to allow download via usb for purchased books. Presumably not including expensive textbooks. Assuming there are no plans to change this in the near future then Amazon has certainly stopped short ofoutright warfare. Although people have been very critical of Amazon on this thread, not without good reason, it is difficult to argue convincingly against what it has done. The development of the tools reached the point where it threatened what I suspect is an excellent revenue stream for Amazon in textbook rentals and sales. And as little as I like DRM that cannot be circumvented, the fact is that it is hardly unreasonable for Amazon to seek to prevent copying of KU and library books. I cannot predict what Amazon is going to do tommorow, let alone further in the future. But Amazon is data driven and collects plentiful information about the use of its infrastructure. Whilst I suspect that those who care about DRM are far too few to have any real impact on Amazon sales, I simply don't know. But I'd say Amazon does. And Amazon, despite having the means to block the availablity of KF8 and the functionality of old versions of K4PC, has for the time being chosen not to do so. It is at least possible that they don't hqve current plans to do so.
I don't think there is much certainty in relation to future DRM circumvention in relation to any vendor. Kobo is certainly a better choice at the moment for most tradpub. Where it does fall down is KU. Amazon has a far bigger catalog of self-oublished and Indie e-books. And at least so far drm circumvention is easy with Kobo. I have old Kindle's and have no difficulties with drm removal at the moment. When I do I will look for other options. |

However, Any Kindle that handles KF8 will do to enable Download & Transfer via USB from the Amazon website. It's KU/Prime that won't work unless you have an old enough KIndle (but not too old). |

On Amazon, go to Content & Devices > Books. Then to the right of the book you want, More Actions > Download & transfer via USB. There you go as long as the eBook is purchased and not from KU/Prime. |

But there is no guarantee that KF8 won't come out as useless as it does with a PW1. And Amazon may someday decide that Download & transfer will give KFX to devices capable of KFX regardless of the firmware version.

It's actually a lot longer then I expected for Amazon to start closing loopholes. I just wonder when other loopholes will be closed.
