ETA: Also, this only works for purchased books, not for borrowed books (KU, etc.)

And it doesn’t work for comics or manga. I made the mistake of buying a manga on the third without realizing things had changed, and now I’m out of luck.

Laziness, mostly. The Amazon sales are usually 1-day sales, so I don't wanna have to wrestle with Kobo support reps to get it done day-of, only to have them not look at the ticket until e.g. the next day, at which point the price as reverted. To boot, ever since Google updated their app billing policy on Android, all Kobo purchases that I make on my phone go through Google Pay instead of Kobo's store, so none of the promo codes or gift card balances can be applied that way. I'd have to login through a browser to make it work.

But I suppose I'll suck it up and give it a try next time. There were a bunch of Vintage Classics/Richard Pevear translations of Dostoevsky works on sale a couple weeks back: it looks so out-of-place in my collection that 3/4 of them were direct from Kobo and that one oddball is a Kindle convert.

This appears to be incorrect. I just tried it with a PW1.

Yes to this, too. I got a PW5 on a great offer and it’s fine so the situation isn’t desperate; it’s more about where I choose to spend my money. Best advice from those who price match: take a screenshot of the price, just in case.

But already you have to sign in with a browser to buy Amazon books. They don't give you the option to buy on their app with Google Pay. So really, moving to Kobo wouldn't be different.

I use the price match often. Always *always* make a screen shot of the Amazon page of the book with its lower price. Sometimes those lowered prices are one day only. The price can change back by the time Kobo checks on your request. Time and again that screen shot has saved me.

That’s another dubious shadow library site.

I used to do as the OP, and many others here have done, used Kindle for pc and dedrm's my purchased books, used the unpack kindle addon and added the files to my Kobo.
This change, initially caused a bit of an upset.
But honestly, take a look at the UK kobo store, the google books store and ebooks.com
I've found books at the same price or less on these non Amazon stores, and the GooglePlay books in particular work favorably for me (GBP for Euro. Amazon list a price in sterling, it's that same figure in euros, .99p on amazon .99¢ on googleboks)
the same Dedrm tool plugin with acsm on calibre.
