You have 30 days in which to return the Kindle if you don't like it. You have to pay the return postage, obviously.

A lot of stores in the US (target, bestbuy) are starting to sell the Kindle 3 so you might want to check it out in store before buying it from Amazon just to see if you like it.

Amazons' CS service is the best, bar none. Check out any retails store before you buy to see if they charge restocking fee, etc.

Using it for a few weeks is way more useful than just trying to hold a wired on device and not being able to actually download anything. You need more than just a few minutes with an un-interested salesperson in order to really appreciate any device.

The Target in my area has several readers in stock. I inquired about their return policy, and was told 90 days, as long as you have the sales receipt and original packaging.

What does your invoice and/or packing list state? What did the Web site from which you made the purchase state?
