I've looked at 4 different payware programs for removing DRM and all 4 were based on the Apprentice Alf/Harper DeDRM code or nodrm's fork of the DeDRM code.

See "Preventing undesired updates". There's still an annoying popup dialog, but it won't force-update.

Yes, I thought about Epubor and the like. But I'm not sure how much easier it would be for the OP. Mostly the paid options seem to be used by people who don't want to install and use Calibre. Not necessarily because it's easier, but they just have no time/don't want to bother with Calibre.

I've never used any paid DRM removers, so I have no idea whether they're easier than the Calibre plugin or not.
