Don't factory reset. Try your Kindle on a Windows computer. If it works, then it's something with your Linux setup.

It's not Windows advice. It's advice to try a different system in case it's something with his system.

JSWolf,

As I have mentioned earlier this setup has been running In Linux for many years. I have also used a "live" test system with a USB with a persistent unmodified copy if the Linux OS Mint, Mate, 21.x and it does not work in the test system either. I have also tested my Kindle in an earlier version of Linux Mate and once again the Kindle did not connect correctly.

Also there are strong indicators that the Kindle is missing or corrupted files as result of the previous testing as noted above.

Thanks for trying but Windows and Linux are very different in many ways.

I have started the rebuild of the Kindle which is no problem for me because I administrate my Kindle solely with Calibre.

I will report the results of the reset as soon as I have time to finish the process.

Thanks,
Tom

[Solved] The permissions of "Kindle" could not be determined

NullNix et al,

I have successfully solved the problem by doing a "reset" on the Kindle.

I am now able to use the Kindle as I have in the past and with my three Linux computers and Calibre.

Thanks to everyone who knew Linux operating systems; many who knew much more than I do about the deep internals of Linux!

Tom

@TCDNV - Looks like you got a lot done while I was away from checking in on my computer (out of town visitors). Glad you got it fixed!

@NullNix - Thanks for mentioning the udisksctl command. That is not a command that I have used before. I will read up and learn about it now. Your username made me smile, thinking of my early Unix days back in the 70's. And an old saying: "Follow not the null pointer, for madness and chaos await thee at it's end!" But in this case, you didn't lead to chaos, you pointed to a command I was not familiar with. Funny ... after over 50 years with Unix and Linux, I'm still learning new commands all the time!

New commands have been added from time to time over the years.

And the young-un's look at us old folks really funny when they ask, "What development environment do you use?" and we reply with, "Uhhhh, ... vi and make?"

But in this case, you didn't lead to chaos, you pointed to a command I was not familiar with. Funny ... after over 50 years with Unix and Linux, I'm still learning new commands all the time!
I didn't discover udisksctl monitor until just now, when it occurred to me that Calibre wasn't installing udev rules so couldn't be hooking into that (instead it wants dbus messages), and that udev doesn't do automounting so something else must be doing it. A few seconds of grepping about in the massive pile of distro sources on my system and bingo, that's the culprit...

(and yeah, I follow null pointers and/or pointers to freed memory entirely too often. valgrind is a work of genius and madness and the single most useful debugging tool I have ever heard of.)
