If you actually want help, you're going to have to provide more information. Where are you seeing it? When does it happen? A snippet of the area of the book where it's happening would be nice.

Calibre does not 'Add' things like that. (black) on its own.
The source must have something calling for that. (Simulated Bold?) Conversion settings (if previously converted) or Preferences: Common options: Styling (the tab) can remove things that were in the origional |

If you go into the book details (E in from the Library) and apply a black foreground color to some text in the Comment section, that will put that color span around the text. And, of course, there's the Conversion settings as theducks mentioned.

If this is in edit metadata after pasting text, I occasionally run into a similar issue when copying text from certain browsers to the comments field. There's a few comments cleaner plugins that can clean it up.

Many thanks. I tend to find the string when I am editing HTML from the Amazon metadata about the book.
Thanks for the tip about Diaps Editing Toolbag, I will see how it does. |

It's possible that I've seen Amazon books do that in their "hidden" areas (I'm not sure how those work, but sometimes there's stuff hidden from certain types of devices). I'm pretty sure I remember some similar color codes. But, I can't be certain. Since I'm converting to an epub, I just strip out all those Amazon hidden things.

The plugin Comments Cleaner was created exactly for this case. The "Diaps Editing Toolbag" is for the book editor, but will never affect your library. "Comments Cleaner" is probably what you are looking for clean up your library of this scraps. |

FWIW: I have my Windows clipboard manager (Clipboard Fusion) configured to strip markup if I paste with Ctrl+V and leave it in place if I paste with Win+V.
Although i don't use it, I could copy marked up text on my phone and paste the naked text on my Windows PC. BR |
