Sheesh. You can use versions up to K4PC up to 1.25 with rendertest disabled without issues and up to 1.34 with the batch file to disable downloading KFX and several people have installed 1.17 in the last couple of months and activated it. See the Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre thread for more information.

But K4PC may not log in on WINE or XP. Not sure on Win7 & 8. Certainly an actual eInk Kindle registered to account is best. KK3 or later except DXG (as it's earlier FW and is just a DX with upgraded screen). Then Download for USB transfer.

I just did it with a book purchased last week. I use calibre almost weekly with books purchased in Amazon, so far not a single problem.

The Advanced notebook seems like a great idea. But I have so many issues as mentioned above. And the shortcuts seem great, except when your underline is taken as a strike through and the line you wrote is deleted. And I can’t get circle words to consistently highlight.

I am not having these issues. After I write there is a brief flash and it is saved. But I use a 3rd party s pen so i wonder if its the pen?

No difference with real Kobo Pen off an Elipsa or 3rd party "Adrawpen" for MS Surface on my Sage.
FW 4.32.x

No issue with lag or ghosting, though I saw that with one FW. I've tried all FW from first for Sage to the current version. Some "break" BT use and some "break" Export from Advanced Notebook.

There are ways to stop the update. Have you read the sticky thread about it in the Calibre forum?

And, if you have an eink Kindle, you can use the download and transfer via USB option. No need for the desktop app at all.

I use Epubor Ultimate instead of Calibre and it's the same deal. You need to use a Kindle app older than v. 1.25. I did a search for v. 1.17 apk and Iinstalled that in Windows. There's a setting in the older Kindle apps to check to stop automatic updates.

This setting no longer works, the app updates nevertheless. You need to run a special .bat file or add an empty file named "updates" to your Kindle for PC installation.

And, Epubor Ultimate uses the same code as the Calibre deDRM plugin, so of course the requirements are identical. Epubor only charges you for it, while the Calibre plugin is free.

Epubor Ultimate is uncomplicated to use if all you want is to get rid of DRM and convert to epub. I then use kepubify. This set up is fast and I never feel intimidated. Calibre was a learning curve and made me go ugh...I just wasn't interested.

If you think it's better to pay for Epubor Ultimate, then you've been made a fool of because they are charging for the same code that's free in DeDRM.

One interesting detail about Epubor Ultimate:

I have chosen to pay for it despite knowing the code is both free and libre, and I have had no issue de-drming Kindle purchases using the current version of Kindle4PC - something that I've read here at MR is not supposed to be possible. I buy from Kindle so infrequently that I forgot about making sure my K4PC was kept at the recommended older version, but Epubor has de-drm'd the several purchases I've made in the last 2 months despite that. Which has made the purchase worthwhile, if it's done something the source plugin doesn't/can't.

Are you sure those books had DRM to start with? Not all Kindle books do.
