If your final version is < 5.10 the update blocker directory works fine.

If your final version is >= 5.10 it gets trickier with each major version bump. Generally it is required to rename the OTA binaries with recent versions.

Can I simply skip past the WiFi configuration and get to the settings screen to see the firmware version? If not, how do I get at that information?

Looking in the read-me it appears that I need firmware in the 5.13.4-5.14.2 range for my KT4 to apply the jailbreak. Given this I would guess my best bet would be to update to 5.14.2 here if necessary.

What binaries require renaming? Is there a package here to accomplish this?

I am a bit surprised that this is not a part of the jailbreak process, as I would not be surprised at some point for them to decide that clearing keys should be part of the update process.

amazon has changed the wifi config dialog over the years.

There may be a "button" for "later", "not now", "skip" or some such. It may not be clear that it is a button.

Maybe tapping outside the dialog box will work.

You might then get an intro to kindle or some such, or your (empty?) library page may come up. Then you do settings -> settings -> device info

You are probably much better off doing kindlebreak instead of eatch-this if your firmware version is or can be put in the correct range.

There is a KUAL extension to rename (and name back) the OTA binaries.

Not part of the process because having renamed binaries might interfere with manual updates.

Did a quick check and as you note kindlebreak does look easier to use if it is possible. Will have to check firmware version before proceeding further.

One of the main reasons I like to jailbreak is for cover mode screen saver. As that is now in firmware as of 5.14.2 that would save some work and provide vendor support. Of course this will require me to install KUAL and the extension to block OTA updates so that updates will be under user control. Beyond that I will have to consider what other hacks I should add for a gift.

Fully charged the KT4W8 and started working with it. Turns out it came with 5.13.6 installed, so Watch This is the appropriate tool to use. Will work that through later now that I know what I need to do.

I am trying to jailbreak my kindle paperwhite 7th G090G10 ... with fw 5.14.2 but I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

I state that it is the first time that I try to do a jailbreak

I follow all the guide to the end and it seems to go perfectly, but:
1- I don't understand how to recognize if I have successfully jailbroken
2 - I try to install KUAL by putting the KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 file in the "document" folder and I can't get it to work

so i think i am wrong somewhere.

Can you help me?

Your are trying to install the wrong KUAL (kindlet version stopped working >= 5.9)

You need the coplate version from the snapshots thread

But first you must install MRPI from the same thread. Have you done that?

no I have not installed anything. I'm doing so much confusion in my head trying to figure out what it takes to get the jailbreak working.

above all I do not find a guide that teaches me step by step what to do, now you told me that I have to install MRPI first, ok I found it, but how do you install it?

tried it with restart via menu or via Power button, after restart my device shows no demo screen, it is the same screen like before

I have just used this approach with a KT4W8 running 5.13.6 and have since side load updated to 5.14.2 firmware and redone the hot fix. I have installed KUAL and some additional software including the OTA rename extension. I have used the extension and hopefully am now safe to go online without fear of an automated update.

Has anyone confirmed that the JB survives an update to the 5.14.3 firmware in case something goes wrong? Is it as simple as running the hot fix again if it occurs?

I need to go online at some point as it appears that some features require online access to an Amazon account. I would prefer to know before doing so that the worst that could happen is I would need to run the hot fix again.

Is it safe to place a copy of the hot fix in storage on the KT4W8 itself in a sub-directory, or is this inadvisable? It would be convenient as then just copying it to the root would allow a quick application of the hot fix when necessary.

Waiting for my Oasis 3 to arrive, no idea what fw it'll be on but I'm itching to try this jb...

If I'm not mistaken, the older jb was persistent through updates. If I understand this right (have skimmed through this thread) this one is not. Will there be updates that will support updates in any way or are we stuck on current version if we want to stay jailbroken?

After that i was about to press "done" but the error occured, it is stucked in the demo menu and i can't click done. after that i connect the device to my wifi, and i hard reset the device.
and it's still stucked in the demo mode

I tried to put the latest firmware in the root of the directory, but again back into demo mode.

I cant reset the device because the reset button on setting can't be clicked, it said "contact: your system administrator"

Sorry case closed. Previoulsy i thought i should creat empty folder name "DO_FACTORY_RESTORE" and because nothing happened, i tried to read the thread again and found out that actually i had to create empty file name "DO_FACTORY_RESTORE"

Hello guys

After successfully using this method to JailBreak my KT4 and installing KUA. I had to factory reset my device ( running out of space and weird bugs).
Now I'm trying to run all the steps again, but I'm stuck at step 4 of Post jailBreak:

Select Update Your Kindle to install the custom hotfix

The option is greyed out and I can't click it.

Could this be linked to the fact that I used renameotabin to disable OTA ?
Which does :

cd /usr/bin
mv otaupd otaupd.bck
mv otav3 otav3.bck

Am I just missing something or could it be that ?
