I have never received the stylus battery status message (don't and won't have one), but did notice the My Notebooks on the bottom of the screen when I went from 4.30 to 4.32. It will be interesting to see if changing the prefs does remove it permanently

So it seems that when my iphone is in hotpost mode it triggers the phantom stylus to appear. I have not had my iPhone in hotspot mode for the last couple weeks, then today turned it on to use with my laptop and boom the kobo says I have a stylus connected. It seems like that is a least the cause in my case of the Sage saying I have had a stylus connected when i did not.
edit: it also seems that my iphone has to be in maximize compatbility mode for the kobo to use see/use my hotpot and that causes the phantom sylus to pop up Last edited by tCobra; 05-09-2022 at 08:47 AM. Reason: add content |

Phantom stylus
I kept getting a status indicator that a stylus was being connected to my Kobo Sage. I could not figure out what was causing it since I do not own a stylus. It turns out that it is my iPhone's hot spot that seems to be causing my Kobo Sage to think there is a stylus connected. When My iPhone hotspot is on and in maximize compatibility mode, it causes the phantom stylus to show up, causing my notebooks to be moved from the more menu to the main menu, which is super annoying. Also, my kobo will not connect to my iPhone hotspot unless it is in compatibility mode. I have had my phone hot spot off for weeks and had no issues with the phantom stylus. Today I turned on my hot spot, and boom, the “stylus” returned. It seems like it varies how long it takes for the phantom stylus to appear. A temporary fix is to go into the hidden kobo folder and change the stylus detected from =true to =false.

If so you should report it to Kobo directly. There's no reason the Sage should be responding to a wifi hotspot by showing a phantom stylus which is connected by bluetooth, especially if bt/wifi aren't currently on. Might end up recovering yet more battery life on the Sage if they manage to kill whatever is causing this. Even if it is only when those are on on the Sage it's a curious thing and should be reported. |

AFAIK the stylus isn't using WiFi or BT.
Though the later MS Surface pens have BT, that's only to control One Note. The actual pen uses a different scheme and works with BT off. I've two WiFi airpoints and can "see" neighbouring WiFi inc Printers. Not seen any false stylus detection on Elipsa or Sage. Perhaps you have a wireless keyboard or mouse or a faulty WiFi point. |

Stylus response
I always have Bluetooth off and Wi-Fi on. The only time the non existent stylus has popped up is when my iPhones hot spot is on and in maximize compatibility mode. (The Kobo will only connect to hotspot in this mode otherwise I would leave it off) Connecting to my home wi-fi does not cause the issue. Only my phone hit spot. The only good news I have now is that I know what causes it. It I am away from home and want to use my phone hit spot to update books or whatever it will cause the “stylus” to reappear.
I did do the email report to kobo not holding my breath but at least I’m trying to do what I can. Last edited by tCobra; 05-16-2022 at 10:45 AM. Reason: Add text |

On my Kobo Sage in the Kobo eReader.conf file I have StylusUsageDetected=false in the [ApplicationPreferences] section. This keeps the "My Notebooks" icon from showing up at the bottom of the screen.
However ... StylusUsageDetected will be switched to true often if when connecting the USB-C power cable if I don't get it connected quickly and cleanly. It doesn't happen every time but it does happen often enough that I can get it to reproduce. Somewhere in the firmware when it detects something with teh USB-C port it thinks that a stylus has been connected. As has been pointed out you can get rid of the MyNotebooks by editing the Kobo eReader.conf file and resetting StylusUsageDetected back to false. It's an annoying bug as as far as I know there is no way to do this other than by actually editing the Kobo eReader.conf file |
