Taking screenshots (without KOreader)?

So, I know it's possible to take screenshots on kobo devices with KOreader, but I'm not particularly interested in going to the trouble of installing KOreader just for the screenshot functionality (especially since I quite like the default UI, and there's not really any other features of KOreader that I really need.)

but the only way I've heard of for being able to take a screenshot without KOreader (at least on my device, which is a Libra H2O) is changing a setting in the config files that essentially changes the power button into a screenshot only button and thus making it useless as a power button (which is not what I want either)

Are there any modifications for kobo ereaders that allow me to take screenshots while otherwise not really changing anything else?

I would like this too. I did edit the config but losing the power button was a nuisance. I do like how easy KORreader makes it to take screenshots

If you have NickelMenu installed, you could create an entry in the config file to toggle the power button screenshot mode on or off.

The below should work:

Code:
menu_item:main:Toggle Screenshots:nickel_setting:toggle:screenshots

My choice was to use an option to NickelMenu to toggle the screenshots setting. Toggle on, take the screenshot and then toggle off again. The real annoyance with a Sage is peeling it out of the cover to reach the power button.

Code:
menu_item : main : Screenshots : nickel_setting : toggle : screenshots
Change to main to match where you want to see the Screenshots item (main, reader, library, etc.)

I see, I'll try using NickelMenu for this then! Thanks for the help

Ironically, it seems one must install NickelMenu "just for the screenshot functionality" in this case, which is at least as much "trouble" as installing KOReader.

well, it's only really extra trouble if you don't already have nickelmenu installed, but to be honest, my problem was less the trouble of installing KOreader and moreso the trouble of dealing with all the extra stuff I don't need just to take screenshots.

Sure, KOreader isn't any more difficult to install than NickelMenu, but it's a different UI I have to get used to, and a lot of stuff to configure exactly how I'd like it... NickelMenu isn't anything extra, it's just an added menu on the already existing UI, and I don't need to include any features that aren't useful to me.

One really useful feature of NickelMenu is being able to toggle USB without having to pull the USB cable and plug it back in to update the metadata with Calibre.

Code:
menu_item : main : USB : nickel_misc : force_usb_connection

On my Kobo that I have KOReader and Plato installed on, I use NickelMenu to launch them. There was no issue installing since I used the One-Click Install Packages for KOReader & Plato to do the install and then customized the NickelMenu config file to add the extra items I wanted such as:

Code:
menu_item : main : Free Memory : cmd_output : 500 : free -m
Everybody needs to know how much memory their Kobo is using, don't they?

Thanks for this. I just recently learned and used the rescan via NM. Is there a thread where all possible functionalities via NM arre listed?

Most of the possibilities are in the doc file (that's the filename with no extension) installed with NickelMenu. Those entries are commented out but I'd suggest copy and pasting the ones you want into your personal configuration file.
