[Conversion Plugin] KFX Input

Hi jhowell,

I've followed this KFX Input thread for a while. Finally signed up to the forum today.

So, I would like to express my gratitude for your hard work in producing these plug-ins. Along with using the DRM removal tool, I have liberated and amassed many ePubs. If you have a donate page - I would be more than willing to donate to you for your efforts over the last few years. Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this.

I've tried following the instructions to install KFX converter into Calibre. Says to restart to finish install but clicking Conversion Input as instructed it isn't there. Consequently, trying to convert kfx file it says format not supported.
It's as if a step is missing from the instructions.

There are two different KFX plugins. You need to install the KFX Input plugin to convert books from KFX format to other formats and the KFX Output plugin to convert from other format into KFX. Make sure that you have installed KFX Input if you want to convert from KFX.

If that isn't the cause of your issue then please provide more detail on what you are doing and the exact messages that calibre is giving you.

Finally got it to install. Clicked book, clicked Convert Books, I get the error message Cannot Convert (name) This book is locked by DRM.

You will have to ask for help with DRM at either Apprentice Alf’s blog or Apprentice Harper’s Github. Assistance with that is not allowed here on MobileRead.

Hello Everybody, hello Jhowell,
thank you for creating and sharing all this information. I have created a KFX from Kindle creator (after importing in Kindle creator a pdf made from scribus) and I'm trying to convert it in epub with Caliber. I have installed the 2 plugins KFX input (the new one from November 27) and output but when I click to convert books I receive a message of error saying:
calibre, version 5.32.0
ERROR: KFX conversion failed: <p><b>Cannot convert Marian Crole 12</b><br><br>Exception('This book has a layout that is incompatible with calibre conversion. For best results use the KFX Input plugin CLI for conversion.')</p>

could anybody help me please?

There are two main categories of e-books, reflowable and fixed layout. Reflowable is the preferred format since it allows the customer to change the font, font size, and other parameters to suit their needs. Fixed layout has unchanging pages that are generally not suitable for e-reader devices. Calibre is designed to primarily handle reflowable formats.

By starting with a PDF you have created a fixed layout e-book. The KFX Input plugin is able to extract the PDF back out from the book you created, but it won't be able to change it into a reflowable book. To do that you need to go back to whatever source format you used to produce the PDF, hopefully a Word document, and convert that to EPUB.

Added: If you wrote your book in Scribus then look into whether Scribus can export a reflowable format such as Word or EPUB.

Thanks for the plugin, though I think I found a small issue.

Line 49 of kfx_input/kfxlib/yj_book.py is from calibre.constants import config_dir, the result being that you can't import kfxlib without calibre.

(I'm assuming you're going for calibre-less compatibility since every other from calibre ... import has try-catch guards.)

Thanks for pointing that out. I have tried to make kfxlib be independent of calibre as much as possible. I will fix that in the next release of the plugin.

4. installed plugin KFX input via my Caliber PC

6. Problem is I wanted to convert to PDF in Caliber, but getting the error:
This book has DRM

Cannot convert "my book name"

Its sad.. I been using Caliber for years and managed to convert all my books into PDF format, but I noticed in past 2 or 3 years ? Amazon downloaded books instead of just 1 .azw file, 1 single book started having many files.
So I was happy to find this thread, and read bit high level.. I don't really wanna read 1000 lines of technical text.. just wanna be able to convert book into PDF.
But.. I managed to do right steps.. I think..

What I would like now to know is:
- Is it possible or not to convert in Caliber Amazon books on above format of the book I just bought ? Just a simple YES/NO would suffice please. And if answer is NO, what workaround can I so also on a simple way.

ps. Its so bad this amazon attitude on DRM.. its stupid, 10 years ago I would get pirate stuff, then I moved into buying digital content/software and I'm getting restricted!!!
Even if people remove DRM and share to online public, I'm sure nowadays consumer attitude is to buy stuff.. so if 50k people buy a $50 usd book = $ 2.5 million usd
I'm sure both amazon and authors are happy enough, even if book gets put online and used by others 50k people that didn't payed for it..

You are not going to be able to remove DRM from a book that was downloaded in KFX format using Kindle for PC version 1.28. That version of K4PC uses a form of DRM that the DeDRM plugin cannot handle.

There are solutions that will work to be able to import that book. The easiest is to disable KFX format in Kindle for PC and download the book again. See Method 2 in the post Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 (and later) and KFX in calibre. (Use the alternate method that works with more recent versions of Kindle for PC linked in the second paragraph.)
