IMHO, if there is something easy to ignore, it's WiFi more so then games. Once you start the games, you may not find as easy to ignore as the WiFi.

If the PB616 has a Carta screen that sounds even better, thanks for these suggestions, this looks like the best candidate so far.

As much as I'd like to have no games, I accept that I'm unlikely to find a reader which fits my requirements without any at all. Even the PocketBook Basic I used previously had chess, and indeed the PRS-505 with PRS+ installed has games, albeit I've buried them in menus.

Failing on nice to haves isn't the end of the world, I accept that I'm limiting my own choices by restricting the choice to readers without internet connectivity.

Why is WiFi harder for you to ignore then games? But why is WiFi too hard to ignore? I've never ever found WiFi hard to ignore.

Internet access opens a world of content, I'm yet to enjoy a game of digital chess.

Make sure router has a long password (written down) that you can't remember. Then no problem.

Keep password address book in a locked drawer in the basement with "beware of the leopard" on it.

Or get someone else to enter a password and ask them not to give it to you unless it's a life-or-death emergency

I gotta agree with everyone who said that the internet on e-ink readers is so slow you would be very unlikely to be tempted by it. You might be so bored waiting for a site to load that you'd switch over to read some of your books while waiting....

I'll write it on the back of a planning application and hand it in to my local council just to be doubly sure.

I can see wanting to avoid internet capability for kids. But the usability of the browser on dedicated e-readers really is a non-issue. Especially for an adult who should be able to have some self control. It doesn't take much self-control at all to avoid something that doesn't work.

You've stated that the browser on readers don't work a fair few times now. What are you judging this by? From pictures of even old Kindles I can only assume that they have fairly decent CSS and JavaScript support, although I imagine JavaScript heavy pages or pages with complicated stylesheets would get painful to use quite quickly.

I put "usable" at reading plaintext, rendering an HTML form and submitting it. If any reader failed to render 68k.news I would be amazed (and somewhat disappointed, I have a very cheap PRS-T1 on it's way as an experiment for using an eink device as a news reader).

I'm judging it by the 7 various Kindles I've owned since 2007. The browser hasn't changed since 2007.

I just tried it on my brand new Paperwhite. I tried the pre-set bookmarks. The Google one wouldn't load correctly and kept pulling an "expired cert" error. Tried the Facebook bookmark, never loaded. Yahoo never loaded.

Wiki was the only page to load, but trying to navigate locked it up.

98% useless. Based on my personal experience.

That's worse than I expected, for the sake of curiosity could you tell me if http://68k.news works? Also is the date and time set on your Paperwhite correctly?

Time is correct, not sure where the date setting is? That news site loaded pretty well, with no issues.

That's reassuring about the news site (for my purposes anyway).

I suspect that the expired certificate messages and being unable to load those sites is likely an SSL error due to a date mismatch between the Kindle and the servers.

Whether it's worth sorting is of course a question of if you want it to work in the first place, if you're happy without it it may not be worth the hassle. If you do I'm sure you're in the right place to find somebody with first hand experience.

I'm pretty confident that this isn't expected behavior for a new device though, no matter how bad the browser may otherwise be.

I can't find any setting for the date on this Kindle. I don't remember ever messing with a date setting, on any of my recent Kindles.

Browsers on e-ink devices are terrible for a number of reasons. The CPU and RAM is low so performance for that reason is terrible. Updating e-ink screens is slow and has issues with ghosting. That means that complicated pages don't work and if there is any sort of animation, it looks terrible. They don't tend to support newer web features. Someone mentioned that the browser on the Kindle hasn't changed since 2007. I don't know if that is true, but, I'd put the browser on the Kobo at least five years behind PC and tablet based browsers.

For a Kobo, a text only page like you example works fairly well. But, scrolling means a lot of flashing as it the text is refreshed.

The other thing for e-ink based dedicated ereaders, is that any internet usage is a very secondary thing. They use the WiFi to sync books and status. But, it happens in the background. There are no notifications from other apps, the home screen shows books, not other apps with notices. Opening the browser takes multiple clicks and it is a deliberate decision to use. Honestly, if you are able to let the internet on an e-ink ereader distract you from reading, then you probably would have been distracted by anything and possibly should reconsider what you are reading.
