Conversion of Google Play books or books from places other than Amazon
I just upgraded to a new computer and am now running Windows 10 and Calibre 5.34. I haven't done the reinstall of Kindle for PC and then trying to get 1.17 installed again as I don't know if it will run under Windows 10. Plus I admit that I really am trying to avoid having to make the changes that are required for Kindle to not download the version of ebooks we can't deDrm.
My question is, can I download ebooks from places like Google Play or Nook and then have the newest DeDrm loaded into Calibre and have them convert properly? I just want to have my books able to be transferred to my phone where I am able to read them with my preferred ebook reader, Marvin. I hope this all makes sense. |

Google Play books, yes. Also Kobo books. Nook books, no. B&N doesn't let you download the files to your PC to deDRM them.
Kindle for PC 1.17 is running on all my Windows 10 computers. You need to take some steps to not allow it to automatically update, though. |

If you load a Google Play book into Adobe Digital Editions, it would deDRM the book and save it somewhere I can then move it onto my phone? |

The plugin must get the key from somewhere, that's why ADE is needed. The process is similar to Kindle for PC. You open the book in ADE first and then add it to Calibre from the ADE folder.

I always could go back to the Kindle way as I have all the files for that. I'm just lazy and was hoping that Google Play would be more like the "old way." |

If you install the DeDRM and DeACSM plugins, you can download the .acsm file from Google, Kobo, etc. and import that file into calibre without needing ADE installed. You will need an Adobe ID since that is required by both plugins.
