Why aren't you using the latest Calibre 5? Is the Calibre you are using 64-bit?

How are you obtaining this file? From your Kindle, Download & Transfer from Amazon’s website, Kindle for PC, or something else.

Are you getting AZW for all books or one particular book? If one book then what book is it?

Fair enough. I always transfer the azw (and the file has always been of that extension without fail) via computer, after which I remove the DRM and sideload the now azw3 file through USB cable to my PW4.

To repeat, I get the azw extension every single time I buy a book from amazon.

The Calibre software I'm using is 64 bit. I never felt the need to update.

That sounds like the expected behavior if you are using Kindle for PC to download your books. That program always uses .azw as the file extension regardless of the actual book format. When you import into calibre the actual format is detected and the extension is changed to reflect that.

I transfer the e-book to my laptop, after which I sideload the de-DRMed, new azw3 book to my PW4. I don't involve Kindle for PC, AFAIK.

I don’t know what issue you have with azw3, but there is a KFX Output calibre plugin you might use that would enable KFX features when side-loading to your PW4:

You meant well. My problem is different than what the link contained. But I am okay if there is no satisfactory solution to my issue. Anyone who wants to help is welcome though. I learn a lot this way.

I know the Calibre 5 is faster then Calibre 4. Also, Calibre 5 is running under Python 3 and it's possible it might be able to do the conversion of the Complete Dickens.

If the Complete Disckens is KF8 (.azw3) then you can use the KindleUnpack plugin to shift it from KF8 to ePub. Then you load the ePub into the Calibre editor and fix whatever errors you get when using the editor's error checker and epubcheck.

I'm not that advanced a user. Is there any relevant way to teach oneself Calibre's secrets, apart from the official helping website? Something detailed. So far the most advanced thing I can do with the software is to add a png to each Chapter of the book I'm editing.

We are moving away from the first issue, but among others, I'd really like to 'cut' omnibuses in their units.

First off, update to the newest Calibre. If you use the DeDRM plugin, go get the latest version and install it.

If you want to split an omnibus, you'll need the EpubSplit plugin and any Kindle eBooks will need to be converted to ePub.

As for shifting, you'll need to install the KindleUnpack plugin and the epubcheck plugin (editor plugin). Then use the KindleUnpack plugin to convert the KF8 to ePub and then load the ePub into the Calibre editor. Use Check book to check for errors. If you don't understand the errors, just post here and we can help. Then once that's sorted, use epubcheck to check for errors and again post here is needed.

Before installing the current version, make a backup of your settings directory. Then you can restore it if you want to go back for some reason.

No you cannot unless 4.23 is a portable version and you'd have to install the portable version (32-bit) and then using a program to allow you to extract the files from an MSI file. You would then copy the 64-bit files over the 32-bit files. But to be honest. I have a 64-bit 4.23 portable and I don't use it. I should probably remove it.

I think I have a bad case of cold feet. I've struggled to get the Calibre I use going, and I'm afraid of jeopardising that. Also, I do hold the belief, unless otherwise proven, that the downloading of a file from amazon cannot have anything to do with what Calibre software I use.
