CBZ not detected FW 4.26.16704

Hello Everyone,

I have a big problem... When I want to add a CBZ file on my Aura One, it is not detected by the device...

Not sure that it is linked to the last FW, as I did not notice it... At first only a few sometimes did not show up, and recreate the archive solves the problem.

But more and more CBZ did not work... and recreating archive will not work...
But sometimes, when I insist, without making any change on the CB, it finally appears!!

One day, after forgetting to charge the Aura One, all my CBZ disappear... And impossible to put in the same that were working!

I try to do a reset, and right after, everything seems to work, even the cbz that were not working one hour earlier...
But now, it goes crazy again...

What is your thought? does I have to think to buy a new reader?

Thanks in advance!

It is not an issue with firmware 4.26.16704. I don't read many comics, but, I have tested both comics in CBZ and CBR formats with no issues.

Do you get the importing screen when you disconnect the device? If so, it means the device is seeing some new books and attempting to import them. And if the don't get imported, then it usually means there is an error in a book that is preventing it from being imported and that is blocking later books from being imported.

If the import screen is not being seen, then the device is not seeing the new books. That could mean they are not there. It could also mean you have put them in a location that is not searched. With the current firmware, there is an option that can be added to the config file to prevent the device from searching some directories. If you have this, and the comics are in these directories, then the won't be seen. That could also explain why the others disappeared. You could put a comic in the root directory of the device and see if it is loaded from there.

Are other formats being imported? Are there any other problems? Such as the reading status for books being lost?

To give you a bit more information:

I use the Aura One since the release in France without any problem.

The first time I noticed this problem was when I tried to read 8 volumes of Demon Slayer.
I put all 8 volumes at the same location, the 8 archives were created with the same software and same parameters. Only 5 appears. I tried to recreate the archives with a different software : 2 on 3 appears... For the last one, i tried several times and after 5 or 6 tries, it appears...

I mentionned the fact that after a full discharge of the battery, all my CBZ disappear :
1 - They were still on the memory, they disappear only from the kobo interface
2 - epub novels were not affected : still accessible and no loss of progression
3 - a new thing happens right now! Again, I run out of battery and the cbz I was trying to put in the Aura One just appears... I tried to connect it to my computer... I add an epub... Import screen does not appear... and not only the epub was not showing, but the CBZ disappears....

Seems to be more or less random... whatever the format... but happens more and more often...

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have the same problem if I drop the file like on a USB drive but also through Calibre...

Also, Kobo software is picky about the fact that the used file extensions must match the file internal format. Hence, file extension .CBR (RAR compression) and file extension .CBZ (ZIP compression) must correspond to the file contents. I've seen myself that mismatched files did not show up in the e-reader.

You can check this with the aid of for instance the Notepad++ editor whether the first 2-4 bytes of the file (=magic number) corresponds with the extension:
  • CBR files must start with Rar!
  • CBZ files must start with PK
When needed, adjust the file extension to the real file internal format.

Are you getting any errors when using calibre? What you describe are symptoms of a corrupt database. The device runs OK, but, the updates do not get stored. The when the database has to be read, such as after the device is powered off, the data is from the last time a successful write was done and the data is probably inconsistent. I would expect an error when calibre is getting the list of books, but, it is possible the database is not corrupted in the areas that the driver uses. You can do a complete test of the database using an SQLite database management tool. Or, my Kobo Utilities plugin has function to do this.

But, I think you will need to sign out of the Kobo account on the device. Doing that will rebuild the database and import all the sideloaded books again. Before doing that, I would take a full copy of everything on the books partition. That way, if signing out does not fix it, you can restore this to get back to the same status for your books.

Or, it might need a factory reset. That also formats the books partition so that you would need to sideload your books afterwards.

As well as that, the device does have some limitations on the file names involved. I don't know if the internal file names follow the same rules as the external file names. Calibre will massage the book file names so that they are correct. The rules it uses are probably stricter than what is needed, but, will work.

I think there is also a maximum level of directories in the comics. I recently saw this when I renamed an epub to .cbz and it wasn't imported. I have done this before with no issues, but, this time the images were at least three directories deep and it wasn't imported. I have loaded them with one level of subdirectory with no problems.

Thanks all for trying to help me.

But, nothing is working...

For the creation of the cbz/cbr, I know quite well the limitation as I think I've made all the errors several years ago... I take care to not use special characters, not too long name, one directory ony, etc...
And as I said, a same cbz can appear and disappear all of sudden...

I have no errors in Calibre, but I also thought about a corrupt database... And I already performed a reset : at first, it seems to solve the issue, but after a few, the same problem appears again...
I always take care of the way I unplugged the kobo from the computer... I'm pretty I'm not doing any mistake... That's the 4th kobo I used and it is the only that have this problem...

I think I will give up... maybe the time to test a new one...

Thanks again!
