Patch? Sounds like I should. Where/what is this patch?

I have run into quite a few ebooks that have errors and cause issues on my Kobo ereaders. As for the number of books bought? I suspect that I purchase more ebooks that most of the posters in these forums and I find the few minutes on the average required to do basic cleanup to be worthwhile for my reading experience.

Both were vastly different, and the kepub file was much nicer looking. I was a little surprised, as I had heard from others that epub was supposed to be "better". I suspect that my ignorance is a bit at play here, though. I may be able to make the epub version better through tweaking of the settings and conversion in calibre.
Can you please take some screen grabs or photos of the same eBook in ePub and KePub? Thanks.

That patch is nice! A lot of quality of life improvements. Thanks for the tip on that. I just had a heck of a time trying to get an epub onto my Kobo Libra, though. For some reason Calibre is absolutely refusing to send an epub, even if I specify it through the "send specific format to device". It keeps sending Kepub. I even removed the kepub plugins. Removed all references to kepub in the outputs, etc. EVERYTHING. It's baffling. I finally resorted to copying directly from Windows Explorer. That worked. Epubs seem to show up much better with the patch, for sure.

KoboTouchExtended is what turns it into a kepub, so you'll want to disable that.

That worked. The main differences between the epub and kepub seem to be related to how the margins and headers are handled. kepub seems to fill the margins and headers more cleanly. However, the fonts seem to render more cleanly on epub to me. If I could have both, it would be perfect. The Chareink font looks really nice in epub.

Yes. If I can't easily sideload a book (via Calibre at present) then I wouldn't buy it. I started out with a Nook and purchased books from Barnes & Noble, but they're no longer even visible in my rear-view mirror.

That is the first time I have heard of this. I've been buying books from them for about eight years, and I can't prove that anything is missing. There are a lot of books that Kobo no longer sells, so I cannot display the book details in the store, but, the book is still in my library and can be downloaded either as an epub, or directly to the device. I have about 680 books from Kobo, so I'll admit I haven't checked all of them. I haven't always been good on keeping track, but, whenever I have looked the book is still available to me.

I sideload everything. For a couple of reasons. Number one is so I can use the DeDRM plugin for Calibre and strip off the DRM. DRM would not be a problem on my preferred reading device - a Paperwhite. But I also put my current book onto my cellphone so if I'm stuck somewhere without the Paperwhite, I can still read it. I use MoonReader on the cellphone, and that doesn't like Amazon's DRM.

Also, by sideloading, I can leave WiFi off. That saves battery. It also keeps updates from happening until I allow them to happen. And it keeps my "Ad supported Kindle" ad-free. No internet connection, no ads (you do have to wait a little while for any current ads to drain off, but when the device runs out of ads it is then ad-free).

For the books in question, when I click on the link in the "My books" section, I get taken to a page saying "this book is no longer available" or words to that effect. In at least one case, the same book is still available for purchase - clearly a revised/corrected edition, one that Kobo considers a different book and wants me to buy AGAIN. That ain't gonna happen. I think it was about the third time it happened to me that I wised up and downloaded ALL my Kobo purchases, which is now my automatic procedure.

I see that for quite a few books. But, if I click the download option, the book is still downloadable. And the book is still syncing to my devices. I haven't checked every book, but, I have so far all that are listed in "My Books" are still available to me.

For me, they are neither downloadable, nor syncing to my devices. I should say that this was the case when I last tried. After 2 or 3 actually disappeared from my Kobo device, I decided to simply download them all. It's been a year or more since I last attempted to access any of these desaparecidos, perhaps the situation has changed. Being told I actually need to buy a book again was the clincher for me - "you bought this book but can't have it, buy this one (with the same name, by the same author and with the same cover image) instead" is a suboptimal customer experience imo.

Just for the heck of it, I set up Kobo Desktop in a new VM. I then downloaded all the books I've purchased from Kobo and all 1732 of them showed up. There are quite a few that are no longer available for purchse but much like Baen, if I had purchased them, I can still download them.

Last edited by DNSB; 07-08-2021 at 11:54 AM. Reason: changed wording to available for purchase
