While I personally don't find Bitter or Bitter Pro attractive fonts for long term reading, they are serif fonts.

I'd say it's prettier than Bookerly and has many glyphs ... But that's a matter of taste, of course.
And him must be corrected, the line spacing is too large.

I don't find it prettier than Bookerly but again, a personal taste. As for the glyph collection? I've attached an image of Bitter's glyph support below. Other than Latin and Cyrillic, it's glyph support is not impressive with 976 glyphs supported including a very unimpressive 2 ligatures.

Maybe we're talking about different fonts, perhaps? I see 1502 glyphs.

Bitter Pro
Yes. Because glyphs are not the same as characters (many glyphs aren't characters)

They are slab serif fonts. Smtg between sans serif and serif.

An interesting view. For me, I seem to remember being told that each glyph of a font represents a character with the quibble that some of the glyphs can be combining characters and other glyphs are combined characters. A y combined with a ˘ (breve) or a ў for example.

A slab serif is still a serif just a didone, Clarendon, etc. serif is a serif. My personal favourite tends to the transitional serifs. And yes, I've seen and participated in arguments about slab serifs just being sans serif designs with a heavy weight serif added.

Not every glyph in a font is mapped to a Unicode character.
Literata has about 1700 glyphs and 1200 characters. (I don't count Unicode composites - it is a different story).

I'm not an expert, but you can have glyphs that are not mapped to any character, or glyphs that are just a character's components (not Unicode composites, as you wrote, but internal components)

Maybe, for me serif is just serif, not sans, not slab.
Have you seen any printed books using slab serif?

A couple of kids books. But then that publisher also published a couple of books using Comic Sans. They published those have your kid's name as the protagonist books.

As for the types of serif? As I said, I prefer transitional serifs but that does not mean that I (at least not with a straight face) try to argue that Old Style, Didone, slab, Clarendon or glyphic were not also serif fonts.

For a real argument, are blackletter fonts serif fonts?

I know blackletter fonts only from heavy metal band's names

In the end it's a matter of naming. Why we call "sans serif" if there are no serifs in sans?
I agree, slab may have some kind of serifs. OK. But for me it's too modern and too different from more traditional serifs.

IIRC, san serif fonts are a relatively recent development (the early 19th century is recent in typography). Would you have preferred Egyptian fonts as a name?

No. I would prefer 3+ groups:
- serif
- slab
- sans
- heavy metal
- ...

"sans" means "without". So, "without" what? "sans serif" tells me that the font does not have any serifs. And the same with "slab". It is a type of serif so doesn't quite make sense by itself.
