I disagree.

Let's say I want to suggest a friend might enjoy a certain memoir - whose author is female, is a former African president, but I can't recall her name or the title of her memoir. My Authors library would help me find Ellen Brown Sirleaf, and provide a link to her works in my Books library where I would find "This Child Will Be Great".

BR

I'm currently reading Clark and Sirleaf's Pandemic Report

Given that opening calibre's tag browser has an Authors item which when you click on the down arrow shows a list of all authors in it's database, it's hard to argue that another program would give you an easier interface. And what do you do about the mass of authors where male/female/whatever is not immediately apparent from the name -- is S. W. Clarke male or female? Was Andre Norton male or female?

If Kovid was charging us what Adobe does, you might have a point. As it is, he went with the lowest common denominator. And note that I gave an example where Adobe has issues on Mac OSX due to variable support for case sensitivity.

Hmmm... metadata download will cover most of your author, title, series, year of publication, tags, etc. Author's year of birth, etc. would call for a custom column. For information on custom columns, see the calibre FAQs for Why doesn't calibre have a column for foo?, the calibre custom columns entry in the calibre blog, etc. Repeat the custom columns for other columns you want that calibre does not support out of the box.

I'm not sure what you mean by extension? epub? azw3? That is already covered by formats.

As for dimension? Are you putting paper books in your library with the paperback/trade paperback or hardcover? Otherwise unless you have an pdf or other fixed format file, that might be worthwhile but since most of my ebooks are reflowable, dimension is a rather meaningless concept?

What does your response have to do with my posts? Are you suggesting that you would never forget the name of a male author? If not, then scrolling through the Authors list in hopes of recognizing the author's name would be applicable to any author regardless of gender, ethnicity, etc. If so, well, shame on you.

Read what I wrote, here it is again in a more precise and implicit-free form

Maybe when you mellow with age you too will find your memory fading. I read or heard that a symptom of the Pandemic Blues Syndrome is forgetting what you did or said five minutes ago

for sex: I repeat that my problem is that I cannot keep a single archive because my PC crashes (and in any case I don't like having everything together, I find it absurd to have the classics with comics in the same archive). So with Everything I find everything in a second, with Caliber I have to open the right archive, always if I remember which one I put the book I am looking for because some books can fit into different categories / archives

truncated names: I don't think I understand your answer well. I just reminded you that using Caliber I feel like I went back to the days of MS-DOS and this is undeniable. Here they even advised me to use Caliber on the command line ... a nice thing in the past for the nostalgic

metadata: sorry but I don't understand, I need the columns I wrote to be shown because I often do targeted searches and I need to have them immediately visible. My monitor is not very big and I can only put a certain number of columns.
The extensions I need to replace the books I have in pdf with epubs when I find them
The size I need to understand if I have duplicates, if they are the same size I delete one, if it is different I open them and keep the best one

I didn't understand how you do it, I have many fields to add:

year of birth author
author
title
series
year of publication
tag
dimension
extension
Author, Title, Series, and Tag, Published (date published) already exist. You don't have to create those two columns. You also don't need extension to to keep track of what format your eBooks are in.

So from what I see, you only need to create two custom columns.

It seems like Calibre is not a suitable tool for you and you would be happier with just files sorted into folders. You don't want to use practically limitless organizing and sorting options of Calibre, but an external program. Fine. Why use Calibre at all, then? Clearly you want something else than what Calibre offers.

but what is the answer? I have pointed out some limitations of a program that I find fantastic and you, instead of advising me how to solve my problems, do you recommend me to change the program? It's like saying you have problems with women and I advise you to become homosexual

I don't think I understand, could you show me an optimized Caliber screen as you prefer? Thanks

But, as you have already rejected all the suggestions on how to use calibre, what other conclusion could we make? Your desires are incompatible with the basic design of calibre, so all we can do is suggest you use a tool that is compatible with those desires.

I think that a major obstacle to the proper use of calibre by lauraq is the crash she is experiencing when she tries to load all of her ebooks - since she's unable to take full advantage of calibre metadata and appreciate many functionalities of calibre itself or its plugins, it is natural to turn to alternative ways to organize her files. But it should not be necessary at all, and for the vast majority of users it is not.

Since this crash is certainly not part of the normal user experience perhaps we could help with this basic technical problem? How many ebooks are we talking about, precisely? On what computer with how much memory? Are there error messages that would help to identify the cause of the crash?

You can do 2 things, accept that there is someone who detects problems that you do not detect and, not for this reason exclude them from the lucky users of Caliber ... or, better, avoid answering me if you think my criticisms are stupid or useless. I ask for help and discussion with kind and helpful people (and patients) and I know that not everyone has these characteristics

Yes, it's true, but I have to be honest, I would never have put my collection by Walt Disney with Dostoevskij in the same archive

Terrible for my eyes. The dark look and the small lettering ... terrible
Seriously, I don't think I understand anything about your speech, sorry

I'll post a picture of my Caliber ((in this archive I have excluded some columns because I didn't need them)

Thanks
