It means that at smaller sizes, Bookerly does not render correctly on a Kindle. The Kindle needs hinting.

Kobo does not need hinting. Kobo can work with or without hinting.

Jon, I wrote above that I watched Bookerly 3 years ago (that is, I ripped it out of the firmware). I climbed into the wiki (not the English version), saw that the latest version is 1.020 - I was surprised, but believed. In version 1.201 it was removed, I suspect, so it makes no sense to install it. So?

You can add hinting to Bookerly if you want. I use ttfautohint to deal with hinting. There is a separate GUI you can use with it as it's a command line program.

Overcame laziness, forced myself, downloaded the Amazon firmware (5.13.5, am I not mistaken?). There is version Bookerly 1.020 ... How so?

Jon, did you personally unpack the firmware and fix version 1.201?

The Bookerly I have is from firmware 2.5.6.5. It's that old. I decided I wasn't all that interested in Bookerly and kept it around for testing purpose.
