How does Kobo decide which collection/author to display on the home screen?

On my Aura HD's home screen, it displays the four most recently read books, a link to My Books, and a link to a collection or author. Usually it's the most recent collection I've opened, but occasionally after finishing a book it switches to a random author or oddly enough sometimes leaves it blank.

How does it decide which one to display?

Also: I doubt such a thing exists, but can it be made to display a preset collection? I would like to show my Reading List collection. I saw mentions of pinning in other threads but can't find any option like that.

I don't know what the rules are. The collections or authors I see tend to fit one or more of:

Collection or author I opened the current book from.
The author for the book I am currently reading if it was opened from other than a collection.
The author for the book I last finished. This mainly happens between books, but, I think it can last a little while into the next.
Collection or author with at least one unread book.
Some random collection.

In other words, no real idea. And I have been thinking about it lately. For some reason my "Kobo" collection (built from a calibre column for where the book came from) has been displayed for a few days. The last purchased book I read, and is in this collection, was finished on the 7th. And I'm sure I haven't opened it since then.

As to pinning a collection or author there, I don't believe there is a way. A long time ago you could do it in the database, but, that method does not work now.

I've noticed that it won't display a collection with just one book (my Loans collection is usually the main culprit). I suspect that might be what's happening when it just goes blank; whatever it's attempting to display doesn't have enough books and it just fails instead of falling back to something else.

same here. it seems to need 4 books at least in a collection for it to show on the home screen.

I have never once had it display by author, only collections appear for me. So I have no idea why it displays what it does. For me it would make much more sense to display a series.

Perhaps even more oddly, my Libra is behaving in almost the exact opposite way. I read Cherryh's Pretender and my home page started showing my collection of her books, which persisted through reading Deliverer, and two other books by different authors.

If I open a book from Collections with 4 or more books, that collection shows. If I open a book from Collections with 3 or less books in it, that space is blank... but if I then mark that book from the home screen as unread, that Collection with 3 books in it will then appear.

I can open up any book from the Books tab, whether it's in a Collection or not, and that will not change the current Collection that shows.

No matter how I open a book though, the Author never shows in that space... whether it's from the Author tab with over 20 books or any other way... never once has the Author shown in that space for me. Only Collection.

It's just odd...

didn't realize it was 4 or more—though I rarely borrow more than 2 library books at a time, and all my other collections are well over 4 books.

If I open my Loans collection (currently just 1 book) and then head back to the home screen, it now shows an author that I have three books, one that is unread.

I don't think it is four or more. I'm sure I have seen an author with only two books. The only numeric condition I am sure if is that there has to be at least one unread.
