That is a good idea. I am wanting to write letters since phone calls has gotten us nowhere. I am a little shaken up by the phone call I just made making us sound unreasonable, but of course we are objecting. They just took their mechanics at word value and none of this still makes any sense.

What's the value of the car? Small claims court you can do yourself but it has a $5000 limit for awards. Yes, I'm a Judge Judy fan.

As for your mother not being able to handle things, have you considered doing a Power of Attorney? That would give you legal authority to act on behalf of your parents.

I may have have made it sound worse than she is with that - she just cannot take much stress well and has asked me for help, and has been relieved I've dealt with most of it. It's not power of attorney level yet - and hopefully never, but you never know. I'm blessed to have a good relationship with both parents, they're sweethearts who deserve to enjoy their retirement. This whole thing is made worse by all that, especially since the money they were going to use for the car was a new credit card they got at the of last year to pay for my dad's oral surgery and to finally get top dentures. They decided to do the 1800+ in repairs and delay his teeth ONLY because of the mechanics reassuring them repeatably that the car was worth it after these "small maintenance repairs".

I may be repeating myself, I've done so many ranting posts over weeks (thank you all for listening, by the way, stress outlet for me.)

The book value for a used Chevy Cruz ... well, I don't know. I have googled it. Places like this say over 10 sometimes, which sounds too high. Here's one for over 9000 for more miles on it than ours had. Kelly Blue Book said from 8-9 Edmunds was the lowest, saying 4-5.

If you have the stamina to push this harder than your mother does, you can still get a Power of Attorney and only use it to be able to speak on this case. It doesn't have to mean she is incapacitated, or that you are taking over all their affairs. It could just allow you to help with this fight. (I think; I'm not a lawyer)

It may be worth looking in to small claims court then. Wouldn't get all your money back but you could try for some. Mom'd have to be able to go to court and present her case though if she doesn't want to give you a power of attorney in this matter.

You're right, BadGood: he could get a Special (aka Limited) Power of Attorney; it's limited, so that he can work as her for topic or area X, rather than everything (à la a General aka Durable Power of Attorney).

(I've had both for various family members at various times through various legal...situations.)

Not for nothing, but having recently gone through this for my mom: General and durable are not the same thing. General means it covers a wide variety of tasks, as opposed to the limited or special POA, while durable means it stays in force even if the person becomes incompetent. In the UK, the long-term ones are called "Lasting Powers of Attorney". If you need something like this, it's vital to consult legal authorities in your own jurisdiction.

In the UK, if the person for whom you are to act is competent (in a legal sense), all you really need is written authorisation to act for them.

The rules/law governing and defining those vary by state. So, as I shoulda said, "check with your local laws." ;-) Durables are usually good unto death; some states have year-length limits on Generals, etc.

Last night my throat got sore on the right side. For a year now I've had a sore throat, but that's mainly been on the left side and recently the middle. It's still sore this morning, so, to be sure, I wanted to book a Covid-19 test. In the Netherlands you can do that online. But the website wants me to go to locations that are more than a thirty minute car ride away, and I don't have a car. Walking distance from where I live there's an XXL location, which, according to reports, can handle much more people than it currently does.

So I tried calling the hotline to see if I can get a local appointment. But it's so busy I'm not even put in the waiting line and I have to try again in half an hour.

I've got no other symptoms; no fever, coughing or loss of sense of smell or taste. It's probably either the stomach acid or my hay fever. But I want to be sure. So now I'm sequestered to my rooms and I'm nervous. Meanwhile I keep trying the hotline (I don't think anybody waits 30 minutes).

Sure hope it's just your chronic problems and not covid! Maybe it's just spring allergies.

I have the weather.com app on my phone. I keep experimenting with the notification settings and hope I've gotten rid of these, but I really hate the notifications that are things like "see house blown apart by a tornado" or "watch tree fall on car". I get that severe weather is newsworthy and we need to know if there's a big storm that killed people. But I don't need to watch some poor person's home being destroyed.
