Coworker bought me a kindle book my xmas, but I don't have a kindle - only a kobo
I have a feeling there's no great/easy solution for this. My coworker bought me a kindle book for Christmas
. I don't have a kindle, and I don't want to read it on the kindle app on my phone. I also don't want to bug him - so I accepted the gift. And now I'd like to read this book on my kobo.My wife has an old kindle she doesn't use (she currently uses kobo, too). Can/should I register that device with my amazon account, so I can download the content (as far as I can tell I can't download it to my computer without having the correct registered device)? And then I'd need to strip the DRM in order to put it on my Kobo? Any other solutions? I just want to read this book! It was a good gift.

Yes, your best path could be to register your wife's kindle, but she or you might need to deregister it first. You might want to make a note of the serial number in her amazon.com My Contents and Devices page. You might then be able to register it in your My Contents and Devices page (I don't know for sure). If so, you won't even have to turn the kindle on or connect to wifi.
Once registered to your account that has the book, you can download for transfer over USB and take the usual steps to liberate it. Worst case, you can copy or download the book to the kindle and read it on that. |

You might want to install K4PC (see the Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre thread for some helpful information. Check message #966 for disabling KFX on later K4PC versions. Add in the DeDRM plugin and convert to epub for your Kobo.

Ahh, I thought about it more - it's been years - and I believe what I did was actually de-register my device, and then I was upset that I couldn't download the books without a registered device. Thanks for jogging my memory - I don't want to spread bad info.
Thanks for all your feedback! I now have a few pathways to take. |

Just a follow-up that I went with this route, and it worked great. I'm glad we still have a registered Kindle in the household. But, even if we didn't, I could have reached out to my parents or siblings and temporarily set up a family account with them.
