Which sounds like a workable solution for someone with IOS/Android devices and a linux PC, if you don't want to mess around with Wine.

I've tried virtualbox from time to time, but each time the particular hardware support I was looking for didn't work. Quote:
Such computers usually only have 1 or very few open ports and only allow access from a small IP white list. |

The OP has already stated to be likely to select getting a kindle as the least undesirable choice. If someone has a suggestion different from already offered, they don't need your permission to make it.

Thanks for all the replies. My current setup is a ThinkPad 530 that is 6 or 7 years old, running Ubuntu 20.04 and an HP chromebook. I used to dual boot windows 7 and it was a PITA because of all the necessary updates and crap windows would do to entice me to upgrade to Windows 10. I ended up wiping and installing Ubuntu and am happy with that.
None of the solutions offered are easy or inexpensive. I'm amazed at how difficult it is to buy an ebook and read it without having to turn to Amazon/Kindle and their proprietary app. I could spend a long time ranting about DRM and proprietary ecosystems, but I suppose everyone on this site feels the same way. I think the industry has 'legalized' itself out of a lot of revenue. Happy Holidays to all!! |

@raynchk yes the all love lock-in force you to use only there things, and as linux user i will NOT use a product that only runs on windows newest. So I buy only drm free books,or go to the library

Usng the home edition I can understand how it is 30% less efficient than previous versions, less configurable, etc. It is, because MS doesn't want us to do any configuration. This even cost me half a working day once when W10 decided to do a fall upgrade I wasn't allowed to postpone. Luckily, postponing/choosing your own time now is allowed, although MS overwrites the setting every now and then during updates. |

Just to add a touch off lightness
My happiest bookshop memory is of one in Barrow-in Furness, UK, when I visited from Australia aeons ago. Two very old ladies ran it; second hand books were stacked on top of each other in vast piles, and a very fat cat slept on the top of the pile I was studying. I managed to get the book I wanted out of the pile eventually. Never seen another like that shop. The old ladies, if extant, would probably be well over 100 by now, if not more, so I guess that little shop has closed... And the cat is sleeping on a tall stack of second-hand halos. Seasons' best wishes. |
